Medical Technologist, Laboratory, PRN
Position Summary
The PRN Medical Technologist performs a variety of complex laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Responsibilities include analyzing patient specimens, operating and maintaining laboratory instrumentation, performing quality control procedures, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. The Medical Technologist works collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide accurate and timely laboratory results that support quality patient care.
Responsibilities
- Perform laboratory testing in chemistry, hematology, coagulation, immunology, microbiology, blood bank, and urinalysis.
- Analyze and verify patient test results for accuracy and reliability.
- Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Perform and document quality control and quality assurance procedures.
- Identify abnormal results and promptly communicate critical values according to hospital policy.
- Collect, process, and properly handle patient specimens when needed.
- Follow established laboratory safety, infection prevention, and biohazard protocols.
- Maintain accurate documentation in the laboratory information system (LIS).
- Absorb inventory management and ensure adequate laboratory supplies are available.
- Participate in proficiency testing and continuing education activities.
- Maintain compliance with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, AHCA, OSHA, and all applicable state and federal regulations.
- Provide excellent customer service to patients, physicians, and fellow team members.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related laboratory science from an accredited program.
- Current Florida Medical Technologist License required.
- ASCP, AMT, or equivalent national certification preferred.
- Previous hospital laboratory experience preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
Schedule
PRN (As Needed)
Variable shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call coverage as needed to support department operations.
Pay
Competitive PRN pay
Evening, night, weekend, and holiday shift differentials available
Certification pay available (if applicable)
Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 pounds.
- Frequent reaching, bending, stooping, and repetitive hand movements.
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity required for handling specimens, operating laboratory equipment, and interpreting test results.
- Ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and work safely with biological and chemical materials.
