Medical Technologist I - UH Laboratory - University Hospital

Responsibilities

• Abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies, performing responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization's values.
• Adheres to hospital policies, including confidentiality.
• Requires regular and prompt attendance; works assigned schedule including overtime and call as required.
• Maintains expertise through continuing education activities and proficiency testing programs, if required.
• Teaches instrument operation or procedures to Clinical Laboratory Science students or new employees as assigned.
• Performs patient care and essential functions with minimal supervision, utilizing proper body mechanics for moving, positioning, and transferring patients and equipment.
• Evaluates and solves problems related to the collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis.
• Follows standard procedures to perform routine, timed, and STAT moderate and high complexity laboratory tests; recognizes and corrects deviations from expected results.
• Reports all critical values following laboratory protocol.
• Maintains instruments by performing maintenance procedures and calibration; operates and utilizes necessary programs on LIS, HIS, or PC.
• Draws blood specimens from patients, if required.
• Monitors the work pending log of designated section and documents actions taken.
• Maintains a neat and efficient work area by cleaning bench tops, equipment, and replenishing supplies in a timely manner; follows procedures for hazardous waste management.
• Communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families, and healthcare team in person and via telephone; responds to overhead pages, if required.
• Maintains accurate and complete records by analyzing quality control data, documenting results or actions, and reporting customer complaints, testing, or reporting errors to leadership for corrective action.
• Accepts and completes all duties positively and without conflict; cooperates, helps others, and improves unit performance.
• Completes all mandatory unit, educational, and hospital requirements; utilizes cost-effective practices in all aspects of the job.
• Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards.
• Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of test results.
• Maintains records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as specimens.
• Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
• Follows established policies and procedures when test systems are not within acceptable levels of performance; identifies and corrects problems or notifies the appropriate supervisor.
• Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
• Participates on committees and in Performance Improvement activities through quality measurement or participation in the ICARE process as assigned.
• Completes related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree with major coursework in Medical Technology.
• Certified Medical Lab Scientist-ASCP: Registry eligible with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) within 1 year.
• MLS - Medical Lab Scientist (formerly MT Certification): Registry eligible with the American Medical Technologist as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist (AMT) within 1 year.
• Comparable combination of education and experience may substitute for the above requirements.

Skills

• Medium-level communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Medium-level organization skills with attention to detail.
• Medium proficiency in Microsoft Office technology: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
