Medical Laboratory Technician - UH Laboratory - University Hospital

Responsibilities

• Abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies, performing responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization's values.
• Adheres to hospital policies, including confidentiality.
• Maintains expertise and participates in continuing education activities, if required.
• Participates in proficiency testing program(s).
• Teaches instrument operation or procedures to Clinical Laboratory Science students or new employees as assigned.
• Requires minimal supervision to safely perform patient care and essential functions.
• Utilizes proper body mechanics when moving, positioning, and transferring patients or equipment/supplies.
• Evaluates and solves problems related to the collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis.
• Follows standard procedures to perform routine, timed, and STAT moderate and high complexity laboratory tests.
• Recognizes deviation from expected results, analyzes and corrects problems, and maintains written or computer documentation.
• Reports all critical values following laboratory protocol.
• Maintains instruments by performing maintenance procedures and calibration.
• Operates and utilizes necessary programs on LIS, HIS, or PC.
• Draws blood specimens from patients, if required.
• Monitors the work pending log of designated section and documents action taken.
• Maintains a neat and efficient work area by cleaning bench tops, equipment/instruments, and replenishing supplies in a timely manner.
• Follows procedures for hazardous waste management.
• Communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families, and healthcare team in person and via telephone.
• Responds to overhead pages, if required.
• Maintains accurate and complete records by:
  • Analyzing quality control data, evaluating the results, and taking appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision.
  • Documenting results or actions in writing or by computer.
  • Documenting customer complaints, testing, or reporting errors and presenting each to leadership for corrective action.
• Accepts and completes all duties positively and without conflict.
• Cooperates, helps others, and improves the performance of the unit.
• Completes all mandatory unit, educational, and hospital requirements.
• Utilizes cost-effective practices in performing all aspects of the job.
• Follows laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of test results.
• Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as specimens.
• Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
• Follows the laboratory's established policies and procedures when test systems are not within acceptable levels of performance.
• Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and corrects them or notifies the appropriate supervisor.
• Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
• Participates on committees as assigned.
• Participates in Performance Improvement activities through quality measurement or participation in the ICARE process as assigned.
• Completes all mandatory department, educational, and hospital requirements.
• Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards.
• Regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required.
• Related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Associate's Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) from an accredited institution or completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) training program required.
• Registry eligible with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologist (AMT) as a Medical Laboratory Technician required.
• Comparable combination of education and experience may substitute for the above requirements.
