Medical Technologist I or Medical Laboratory Technician, Laboratory, University Health Services
About the role
The Laboratory at University Health Services (UHS) is seeking Medical Technologists or Medical Laboratory Technicians to join our team. UHS is dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of UT Austin students through comprehensive medical care, public health education, and specialty clinics.
Responsibilities
- Obtains patient specimens and processes them for testing.
- Performs analyses and reports results on patient specimens.
- Participates in proficiency testing and quality improvement evaluations.
- Maintains current in-depth knowledge of medical technology.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as scheduled.
- Demonstrates professionalism and commitment to quality care by adhering to customer service standards, respecting patient rights and confidentiality, following policies and procedures, and actively supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
- Demonstrates regular and punctual attendance pattern.
Requirements
- Medical Technologist: Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or Chemical, Biological, or Physical Science with one additional year of Medical Technology training. Certified as Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the area of Clinical Laboratory by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent.
- Medical Laboratory Technician: Graduate from an approved school with two-year Medical Laboratory Technician program. Certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent. Successful completion of 15-week training as part of degree program.
Qualifications
- Two or more years of experience in a laboratory performing moderate complexity testing.
- Demonstrated ability to operate clinical laboratory equipment.
- Experience with and a moderate comfort level using a personal computer.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully work with a diverse community and provide services from a non-judgmental perspective.
Skills
- Proficiency in operating clinical laboratory equipment.
- Ability to maintain current in-depth knowledge of medical technology.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and reporting.

Pay
- Medical Technologist I: $63,860 per year
- Medical Laboratory Technician: $55,470 per year
Schedule
This position works 8AM – 5:30PM, Monday – Friday. Occasional weekend and holiday work, as assigned.
