Medical Technologist -Blood Bank

About the Role

Conducts routine tests for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, and performs related duties, following established standards and practices. Reports to supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Adheres to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
• Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities.
• Maintains compliance with organization’s policies, as well as established practices, protocols, and procedures of the position, department, and applicable professional standards.
• Complies with organizational and regulatory policies for handling confidential patient information.
• Demonstrates excellent customer service through attitude and actions, consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of the organization.
• Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and TJC standards and/or standards from other accrediting bodies.
• Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
• Maintains required records, reports, and statistics as directed.
• Requests supplies as necessary to keep materials on hand at all times; may be assigned to order supplies.
• Attends meetings as required and participates on committees as assigned.
• Performs technical functions as assigned, including maintenance, quality control, and quality assurance.
• Reports equipment or procedural malfunctions and troubleshoots problems when possible.
• Performs computer functions as assigned.
• Performs phlebotomy procedures as assigned.
• Labels specimens appropriately and discards specimens after required storage.
• Understands scope of limitations and requests supervisory assistance when appropriate.
• Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

Functional Demands

• Prolonged periods of standing, walking, or sitting while on duty.
• Lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
• Transferring and repositioning patients.
• Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching for patient care functions.
• Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties.
• Optimal auditory acuity required.
• Manual dexterity involving the handling of equipment, instruments, or needles.
• Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast-paced environment.
• Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests.
• Physical conditions are clean, neat, and well-lit; may be subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations, and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions is essential.
• Climate control and ambient temperature variances may be experienced.
• Exposure to limited amounts of hazardous chemicals or substances and infectious disease processes is possible.
• Hours of duty may be irregular or unexpectedly extended due to emergency circumstances.
• Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply; personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
• Licensure/Certification: Must be certified by ASCP, AMT, or equivalent certification and maintain certification. If a new graduate, must successfully pass certification exam within 6 months of hire (failure to pass can result in termination of employment). No license required in Mississippi.
