Position Summary

The Medical Technologist performs and monitors complex diagnostic laboratory testing to support clinical decision making and ensures compliance with regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Performs high complexity testing across assigned laboratory disciplines
  • Interprets and validates test results prior to release
  • Performs advanced instrument calibration and maintenance procedures
  • Investigates abnormal or inconsistent test results and determines root cause
  • Develops and monitors quality control and quality assurance processes
  • Reviews and updates standard operating procedures
  • Trains and mentors junior laboratory staff and students
  • Maintains inventory and appropriate storage conditions
  • Handles and disposes reagents, chemical, and medical waste according to institutional and regulatory safety standards
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned
  • Adheres to RWJBH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science, biology, or a related field
  • Certification by ASCP or AMT as a Medical Technologist, MT, or Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS, preferred
  • Preferred 1 to 3 years of experience performing moderate to high complexity laboratory testing

Special Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of complex laboratory testing methodologies
  • Advanced skill in instrument calibration and maintenance
  • Intermediate knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements
  • Advanced ability to analyze and validate laboratory results
  • Intermediate ability to train and mentor staff
  • Advanced problem solving skills for complex laboratory issues
