Job Summary and Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY: Performs chemical, bacteriological, serological and microscopic procedures in one or more functions of laboratory sections. Maintains records of performance as defined in the Laboratory's general and procedure manuals. Ensures that all policies and procedures are performed as defined in policy and procedure manuals approved by the Medical Director of the Laboratory. Performs all services as they may relate to patient care / treatment with consideration for the age/condition of the patient.

Specific Elements & Essential Functions

  • Performs routine and/or complex testing in specific areas of the lab according to department policies.
  • Knows policies, procedures and practices necessary to perform specimen processing duties.
  • Responds to requests for emergency service in a timely manner.
  • Organizes workload within the department to meet the needs of the institution within established timeframes.
  • Answers all incoming phone calls and requests for information in a timely manner.
  • Reports any incomplete assignments/workload to incoming shift in order to ensure continuity of result reporting.
  • Demonstrates the ability to differentiate results of various tests to determine the accuracy of test result and reports any unusual findings/trends to supervisor.
  • Maintains clean workstation.
  • Demonstrates initial and annual competency in all areas including phlebotomy and processing and all computer related functions.
  • Performs and documents various quality control and equipment maintenance procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations.
  • Adheres to hospital policy for reporting patient safety issues, including errors. Consistently “Puts Patient Safety First” when performing job duties or providing care.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • EDUCATION: 4 year/Bachelor’s Degree
  • CERTIFICATION: Required: Registry eligible, ASCP or equivalent. Successful completion of MT registry within 6 months of eligibility or hire. Registry/Licensure in a specialty area will be considered. Continuing education to maintain registry/licensure is required.
  • PREFERRED: MT(ASCP) or equivalent. Continuing education to maintain registry/licensure is required.
