About the role

Selectee will serve as a Medical Technician (Phlebotomist) in Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) at the VA Nebraska Western Iowa Health Care System - Omaha, NE. The technician performs phlebotomy in the emergency room, inpatient, outpatient, and extended care areas of the hospital and associated clinics. The Medical Technician performs both routine and specialized testing in chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology, and serology in support of a medical laboratory.

Requirements

• English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in basic written and spoken English (38 U.S.C. 7402(d)).
• Selective Placement Factor: Experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-4 level, you must meet one of the following:

Experience

• At least six (6) months of general experience, and six (6) months of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position.

General Experience: Any type of work demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the position or experience providing familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area.

Specialized Experience: Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings, or technical support work in a closely related field (e.g., biological laboratory technician work).

Qualifying examples of specialized experience:

• Applies knowledge of basic specimen collection requirements, order of draw, infection control techniques, site selection, and sample integrity.
• Assists with specialized specimen collections.
• Takes and monitors patient vitals.
• Uses a computerized system to enter and retrieve test results.

Education

• Successful completion of an associate-degree course of study where the second year included a training course of approximately one year’s duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency.
• One year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or biological sciences, plus successful completion of a full-time training course of approximately one year’s duration in a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) school, including instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology.
