Under direct supervision of the provider, responsible for patient assessment and care, and maintaining appropriate documentation. This position requires basic knowledge of specialty and/or primary care and the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients. Coordinates care to ensure high-quality, compassionate patient care and acts as a liaison with other organizations and departments.

Responsibilities

  • Triages all calls, schedules daily urgent/emergent add-ons, receives and relays test results, processes medication refills, supports, directs, and refers patients for consults and/or testing, and handles insurance pre-certification and documentation.
  • Provides complete patient assessment within the scope of licensure, including greeting patients and/or family, performing routine pre-examination procedures (vital signs, assessing and recording objective and subjective data), updating and maintaining accurate patient records, performing medication reconciliation, entering allergy reaction types, and processing refills within certification scope.
  • Coordinates the care team with the care indicated by the provider and works with patients and families on disease processes and/or care management.
  • Assists the provider with examinations and procedures.
  • Prepares and cleans the patient area, sets up equipment, facilitates room setup after procedures, disposes of contaminated supplies, and sterilizes medical instruments.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking for patient management and provides age-specific needs according to standards and policies/procedures.
  • Maintains medical supplies to ensure consistent levels for patient needs.
  • Understands and utilizes necessary computer functions: Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS), Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR), Practice Management, Electronic Medical Records, Laboratory Information System (LIS), Emageon, dictation systems, and other programs to assist providers and staff.
  • May be required to travel to satellite clinics.
  • Maintains a system for accurately documenting and coding in the medical record as per policy and participates in annual quality reviews.
  • Manages patient symptoms as directed by the provider and coordinates continuity of care with other providers.
  • Performs general office duties (keyboarding, filing, telephone, computer, and office equipment) as needed.

Requirements

  • BLS - Basic Life Support certification required (equivalent experience within 1 month of hire or transfer).
  • RN - Registered Nurse license required.
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing (BSN preferred).
  • Working knowledge of Infor, Electronic Medical Records, and Practice Management programs preferred or similar software.
  • PC software knowledge must include Excel and Word.
  • Three to five years of experience in the healthcare system or a similar setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals at all levels.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions

  • Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment, including latex materials or appropriate substitutes.
  • Must be able to move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device.
  • Overall vision and hearing necessary with or without assisted devices.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, or walk for long periods; may require postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials; must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing requirements.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular and predictable attendance, and stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity required, including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling; may require repetition of these movements.
  • Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs., and/or walk/stand/push/pull arm/leg controls.
