Duties and Responsibilities
- Set-up laboratory station and perform quality control checks on laboratory equipment, documenting in written information log;
- Perform finger pricks to obtain blood sample for hemoglobin testing;
- Obtain length/height, weight, and hemoglobin anthropometrics for pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children up to age 5 using appropriate equipment and procedures;
- Document anthropometrics, parental BMI and hemoglobin results in NC Crossroads;
- Access and operate the NC Crossroads computer system in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines and requirements;
- Assist with outreach and retention; route participants to the appropriate clinic area;
- Oversee that WIC clerical components and collection of anthropometric data meets policy standards set forth by the WIC Program;
- Use team approach to ensure full completion of WIC appointments, both over the phone and in clinic;
- Work alongside interpreters, both by phone and in office, as needed to serve families with limited English speaking proficiency.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Some knowledge of the principles and practices of patient care and techniques of practical nursing;
- Some knowledge of common health and safety precautions in working in local health departments;
- Some knowledge of dental clinic operations and protocols;
- Ability to work with staff and patients, under supervision, as set up by departmental policies;
- Ability to maintain clerical records and to compile reports from these records;
- Ability to use sound judgment and empathy in dealing with patients;
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Education and Experience
- A high school or General Educational Development diploma, completion of a one-year formal training course in medical office assisting at a community college or technical institute;
- Completion of a high school or General Educational Development diploma and a combination of one year of clerical and health/dental related experience;
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
