About the role
Performs a variety of clinical and clerical responsibilities to assist care providers in examination and treatment of patients. Enters pertinent information in patient chart, and performs related clerical tasks.
Responsibilities
- Performs clerical tasks such as gathering data, maintaining and preparing charts according to department policy and procedure, sorting and filing according to established system, verifying for accuracy and presence of information, etc.
- Maintains familiarity with various types of medical insurance to explain these plans.
- Obtains pre-certification as required by patients’ health care insurers or managed care providers.
- Types routine correspondence, forms, reports from dictation or handwritten copy.
- Maintains physician’s calendar, schedules appointments and meeting rooms.
- Opens, sorts, and screens mail.
- Answers telephone, takes messages, and provides general information; forwards more complex questions to appropriate staff.
- Telephones patients and/or family members to obtain accurate patient information and to confirm appointments; arranges for Hospital admission.
- Performs clinical duties such as assisting physicians with exams and minor surgeries, preparing treatment room, ensuring instruments and supplies are present, sterilizing and cleaning instruments, maintaining clean and hygienic environment, etc.
- Performs routine tests including phlebotomy, preparation of cultures, preparation of specimens, preparation of urine for urinalysis, gram stains, hemoglobin, etc.
- Conducts quality assurance program tests on office laboratory machines, chemicals and other equipment.
- Relays information to patients regarding preparation for laboratory tests, radiology tests, and special procedures.
- Removes sutures and changes dressings as directed by the physician.
- Obtains health history, checks pulse, blood pressure, weight, height, temperature, vision and hearing and records on patient’s chart.
- Telephones prescriptions to pharmacy as directed by the physician.
- Completes various request forms for office supplies and equipment as directed.
Requirements
- Education: HS Diploma/GED preferred, Completion of a Medical Assistant program.
- Experience: 1-3 years of experience in medial front desk role.
- Licenses and Certifications: American Heart Association Basic Life Support CPR.
