Medical Malpractice Associate

About the role

Shumaker Loop & Kendrick is seeking a Medical Malpractice Litigation Associate with a minimum of four years of defense experience to join our team in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Responsibilities

• Defend health care providers and institutions in medical malpractice and professional liability litigation
• Aid with cases through all phases of litigation, including pleadings, discovery, depositions, motion practice, mediation, and trial
• Analyze medical records and collaborate with expert witnesses and consulting physicians
• Draft persuasive motions, briefs, and other litigation-related documents
• Participate in witness preparation, expert development, hearings, mediations, and trials
• Collaborate with clients, insurers, risk management professionals, and health care administrators to develop strategic defense plans
• Respond to regulatory investigations and professional licensing matters
• Provide practical, business-focused counsel while helping clients protect their professional reputations and navigate complex legal challenges
• Work closely with senior attorneys on case strategy and litigation management
• Manage caseload efficiently while meeting litigation deadlines and billable requirements

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the North Carolina Bar (or the ability to waive in)
• A minimum of 4 years of litigation experience - medical malpractice or liability defense experience is preferred, but not required
• Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills including a strong aptitude for managing and prioritizing multiple projects and deadlines
• Comfortable handling depositions and court appearances commensurate with experience
• A thorough knowledge and understanding of local, state and federal rules of procedure
• Ability to work with a variety of attorneys and staff, and maintain a high degree of confidentiality
