Medical Malpractice Associate
About the role
Shumaker Loop & Kendrick is seeking a Medical Malpractice Litigation Associate with a minimum of four years of defense experience to join our team in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Responsibilities
- Defend health care providers and institutions in medical malpractice and professional liability litigation
- Aid with cases through all phases of litigation, including pleadings, discovery, depositions, motion practice, mediation, and trial
- Analyze medical records and collaborate with expert witnesses and consulting physicians
- Draft persuasive motions, briefs, and other litigation-related documents
- Participate in witness preparation, expert development, hearings, mediations, and trials
- Collaborate with clients, insurers, risk management professionals, and health care administrators to develop strategic defense plans
- Respond to regulatory investigations and professional licensing matters
- Provide practical, business-focused counsel while helping clients protect their professional reputations and navigate complex legal challenges
- Work closely with senior attorneys on case strategy and litigation management
- Manage caseload efficiently while meeting litigation deadlines and billable requirements
Requirements
- Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the North Carolina Bar (or the ability to waive in)
- A minimum of 4 years of litigation experience - medical malpractice or liability defense experience is preferred, but not required
- Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills including a strong aptitude for managing and prioritizing multiple projects and deadlines
- Comfortable handling depositions and court appearances commensurate with experience
- A thorough knowledge and understanding of local, state and federal rules of procedure
- Ability to work with a variety of attorneys and staff, and maintain a high degree of confidentiality
