Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technologist performs laboratory testing and analysis of patient specimens to provide accurate clinical information that supports the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. The role involves maintaining high standards of quality, efficiency, accuracy, and safety while performing assigned technical duties in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment.
Essential Responsibilities
- Perform laboratory testing and analysis of received patient specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
- Demonstrate technical proficiency and consistently follow laboratory testing policies and procedures.
- Perform quality-control activities and maintain compliance with established quality-assurance standards.
- Maintain equipment and work areas, documenting corrective actions for non-conforming events.
- Prepare reagents and maintain adequate supplies required for laboratory testing.
- Monitor inventory to support efficient laboratory operations and minimize waste.
- Apply sound clinical judgment when prioritizing testing and addressing laboratory issues.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve testing-system issues through appropriate departmental channels.
- Cook with technical specialists or service personnel when additional troubleshooting or equipment support is required.
- Absorb and revise laboratory procedures and related documentation.
- Maintain compliance with applicable accreditation, regulatory, safety, and quality standards.
- Communicate effectively with laboratory staff, leadership, and other shifts regarding issues that may affect patient care or laboratory operations.
- Participate in staff meetings, task forces, quality-improvement initiatives, and departmental projects.
- Participate in competency assessment programs when qualified.
- Maintain accurate and timely laboratory documentation.
- Promote a safe and efficient work environment and follow all applicable laboratory safety procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
- Eligible for MLT registry or equivalent qualification, as applicable.
- MLT (ASCP) or equivalent certification is required within one year of hire.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and quality-control practices.
- Ability to work independently and make appropriate decisions in a clinical laboratory environment.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with laboratory personnel and leadership.
- Ability to work successfully during evening and overnight shifts.
Preferred Experience
- Approximately 5 years of generalist laboratory experience preferred.
- 2–3 years of Blood Bank experience preferred.
- Previous experience working independently on second or third shifts preferred.
- Strong technical skills across multiple laboratory disciplines preferred.
Education
- Required: Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or equivalent.
- MLT registry eligibility or equivalent qualification.
- Certification: MLT (ASCP) or equivalent certification required within one year of hire.
Language Requirements
- English: Required - Read, Write, Speak.
Schedule & Compensation
- Schedule: Saturday, Sunday, and Monday
- Hours: 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
- Shift: Night Shift
- Sign-On Bonus: May be available based on eligibility.
- Relocation Assistance: May be available to qualified candidates.
Ideal Candidate
- An experienced Medical Laboratory Technologist with strong generalist laboratory skills, preferably including Blood Bank experience.
- Comfortable working independently on overnight shifts.
- Demonstrates excellent technical and troubleshooting abilities.
- Maintains a strong commitment to laboratory quality, safety, and patient care.
