About the role

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) evaluates specimens for acceptability for proper testing and performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures. Verifies accuracy of results before reporting and reports test results in a timely manner. Performs needed maintenance and calibration on instruments and equipment as appropriate; troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur. Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions, safety procedures, and exposure control/plans for bloodborne and airborne pathogens. Performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, fingersticks, bleeding times) as appropriate for the patient requiring this procedure.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate specimens for acceptability for proper testing
  • Perform accurate and appropriate testing of specimens according to established laboratory protocol and procedures
  • Verify accuracy of results before reporting
  • Report test results in a timely manner
  • Perform maintenance and calibration on instruments and equipment
  • Troubleshoot instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur
  • Comply with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions, safety procedures, and exposure control/plans for bloodborne and airborne pathogens
  • Perform phlebotomy (venipunctures, fingersticks, bleeding times) as appropriate

Requirements

  • Associate Degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or related scientific discipline required by CLIA
  • Registered as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) at (or within 1 year) of job start
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience preferred
  • Valid driver license

  • Working knowledge of MS Outlook and Word

  • Highly developed organizational, planning, and management writing skills
  • Understanding of automated data processing and ability to quickly gain detailed understanding of complex computerized and non-computerized information
  • Proficient knowledge of budgeting, general ledger, and financial statement preparation

Physical Demands

  • Stands, turns, bends, stoops, lifts, climbs, and uses many physical motions in performing day-to-day activities
  • Able to stand for extended periods and do a great deal of walking without experiencing undue fatigue
  • May be exposed to communicable disease or radiation
  • Able to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels, with or without correction
  • Able to communicate, speak, and enunciate to express/exchange ideas and detailed information in person and on the telephone
  • Minimum standard of visual acuity, with or without correction, to shift gaze from viewing a computer monitor to forms that are closer to compare data at close vision

  • Travel throughout the SRHS service area with the employee providing his/her own transportation

Schedule

Shift: 7am - 7:30pm with rotating weekends and holidays
