  • Shift: 1st or 2nd
  • Schedule: 5:30a - 2:00p, 7a - 3:30p or 3p - 11:30p
  • Hrs per week: 36 - 40

Responsibilities

Is responsible for the performance and evaluation of various complex chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic, immunologic, and immunochemical tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases by the physician.
  • Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis of body fluids using manual and automated instrumentation.
  • Accurately and completely report results of tests and procedures.
  • Effectively recognize and resolve problems, troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment and ineffective procedures, and use alternative methods when appropriate.
  • Effectively maintain laboratory equipment. Performs and records instrument checks, quality control procedures, calibration, and other maintenance when required.
  • Maintains a clean and disinfected work area and uses appropriate personal protective equipment, as required.
  • Organize and prioritize work during both heavy and light workload situations.
  • Able to access, input, and retrieve information from the EMR.
  • Able to work extra during shortages or until workload is complete. May include working shifts other than currently scheduled.
  • Assists in the training of new employees in the laboratory.
  • Able to utilize sound judgment and generally accepted medical technology principles when assessing the credibility of results generated.
  • Communicate with physicians or nurses when callback values or problems exist.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent combination of education and clinical experience making the employee eligible for taking the registry examination.
  • Registration by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists within one year of hire.
  • Promptness in answering phone requests, instrument, and out-patient alarms.
  • Maintain knowledge and ability to operate safely all instruments, needles, and sharps used in daily work assignments.
  • Ability to work independently and to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations, and to meet deadlines required by "stats" and routines.
  • Knowledge of Beloit Memorial Hospital policies.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Training, knowledge, and skills necessary to perform one or more of the following activities (evaluation, treatment, and/or patient care) for patients in one or more of the following age groups: neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric.
  • Promptness and efficiency in reporting results of laboratory findings via computer and paper or "call back" results if indicated.
  • Plan, prioritize, and respond to information in an appropriate time frame.
