Responsibilities
- Performs laboratory testing and analytical procedures accurately and efficiently while adhering to hospital policies, competency standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Manages pre-analytical and post-analytical processes, including specimen collection and processing, equipment maintenance, quality control, calibration, and result reporting.
- Ensures compliance with safety, infection control, hazardous waste handling, PPE, and chemical hygiene protocols to maintain a safe laboratory environment.
- Provides customer service and operational support by resolving issues, answering inquiries, performing clerical duties, and educating clinical staff as appropriate.
- Contributes to continuous improvement through proficiency testing, performance improvement initiatives, evaluation of new equipment/procedures, and training or mentoring new employees and students.
Requirements
- Exhibits technical skills and aptitudes related to the laboratory testing, procedures, and processes performed in the department or work area assigned
- Able to effectively communicate in verbal and written English with patients, staff, partners, and customers of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective, and professional manner
- Reads text and numbers in English, and displays the ability to comprehend, measure, reason, match, problem solve, under supervision
- Apply accurately learned computer-related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboards and other peripheral devices
- Exercises clinical judgment and the ability to handle confidential information within hospital guidelines and applicable regulations
- Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Must be able to read, write, and speak conversational English
- Follows and ensures adherence to the Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies; protects confidentiality of patient information and results at all times
- Knowledge of laboratory rules and regulations including AABB, CAP, CLIA
- Ability to work independently and adapt to varying priorities, including directing workflow with minimal supervision
- Ability to maintain equipment/records and perform quality assessment activities
- Ability to operate computer systems to maintain patient documentation, testing records, and other related documents
- Ability to educate and train new staff in medical laboratory settings
- Ability and willingness to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, etc.
- Ability and willingness to adapt to change
- Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals
Qualifications
- Education: Associate in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, OR if the field of study does not match, candidate must meet the CLIA equivalency listed in additional information
- Field Of Study: in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, OR if the field of study does not match, candidate must meet the CLIA equivalency listed in additional information
- Work Experience: 2+ years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting
