Responsibilities
- Performs complex laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, cells, and tissues.
- Identifies bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms, analyzes chemical content of fluids, and cross matches blood for transfusion and aseptically prepares blood products.
- Ensures accurate and timely results for diagnostic, treatment, and preventive purposes.
- Completes all required documentation and follows up on unusual and critical results according to policy and procedure.
- Prepares and obtains specimens for analysis, ensuring their integrity throughout the testing process.
- Operates laboratory instrumentation, performs maintenance, calibrations, quality control, and troubleshoots issues.
- Refers questionable or unusual cases to appropriate supervisors or professionals.
- Maintains continuing education and competency requirements as defined by laboratory policy and certification agency standards.
- Ensures compliance with hospital, regulatory, safety, and accrediting agency requirements.
- Uses hospital, laboratory, and office computer systems proficiently.
- Assists, trains, and orient new staff and students in their respective lab disciplines.
- Affords assistance in regulatory preparations.
- Maintains supply and reagent levels, practicing cost containment.
- Timely reviews laboratory and hospital system policies, procedures, and communications.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested, including phlebotomy.
Requirements
- Associates degree in chemical, physical, or biological science or medical laboratory, or equivalent education and training.
- Experience: 1 year hospital laboratory experience as Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), preferred 1 year experience for Float Pool Network, and preferred 6 months MLT experience.
- Certification: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) - Certification, preferred.
