At Baylor Scott White Medical Center – Sunnyvale, as a medical lab tech, you will process and test various laboratory specimens, review and report lab results, perform operational duties, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and equipment, and adhere to strict documentation and safety protocols.Responsibilities
- Function in all areas of the clinical laboratory, including blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, and urinalysis.
- Perform moderate and high-complexity testing.
- Adjust methods and procedures for neonates, children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly.
- Conduct quality control procedures and instrument checks.
- Demonstrate knowledge of expected lab values for different age groups.
- Notify nursing units and physicians of critical lab results.
- Accurately document procedures performed for statistical and billing purposes.
- Maintain compliance with documentation standards and policies.
- Collaborate with other departments to improve patient care and performance.
- Ensure patient safety and reduce the risk of medical errors.
- Follow standard precautions and operate laboratory equipment safely.
- Stay updated on new testing methods, products, and technologies.
- Maintain knowledge of hospital policies, CAP guidelines, JCAHO standards, and other regulatory requirements.
- Adapt to stressful situations and demonstrate teamwork.
Qualifications
- Required: Bachelor’s degree from an approved college or university, or equivalent such as military training as defined by 42 CFR 493.1489, or qualification at the Medical Technologist level by achieving a satisfactory grade on a HHS examination prior to 2/28/92 42 CFR 493.1491. This meets the required criteria for High Complexity testing as per CLIA regulations.
- Prior experience as a medical laboratory technologist or clinical laboratory scientist in an acute care setting is preferred.
- Registered in accordance with an approved certifying agency (ASCP, NCA, AMT, or CSMLS).
- Equivalency evaluation by NACES or AICE for non-US-trained personnel must be completed within 30 days of hire.
- Licensure, as required by the state, must be obtained.
