Medical Laboratory Scientist III - Lab-South

About the role

Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Clinics operates the largest laboratory in New Hampshire, providing Pathology and Clinical Laboratory services to DHMC & Clinics physician practices, Dartmouth Health system member hospitals, and independent practices and hospitals throughout NH and VT. The department is a leader in process improvement (LEAN/Six Sigma) and features a renovated space designed to enhance workflow efficiency. The lab is high-volume with cutting-edge technology and automation, fostering a collaborative and innovative culture.

This is a 40-hour-per-week, benefitted, day-shift position working Monday through Friday, with rotating weekends and occasional evening shifts. The role involves rotating between clinic locations in Concord, Manchester, and Nashua. A $7,500 sign-on/retention bonus is available for external hires, with certain conditions applying.

Responsibilities

• Independently perform a variety of diagnostic tests in the Clinical Laboratory to obtain data for diagnosing and treating disease.
• Perform venipunctures and capillary draws on Inpatients, Emergency Room patients, and Outpatients as needed.
• Demonstrate knowledge, skills, and ability to perform laboratory tests in a timely manner, yielding accurate and precise results with a low error rate.
• Troubleshoot and resolve problems, ensuring patient results are not reported until systems function correctly.
• Perform and evaluate quality control and instrument function checks using established practices to assess test system functionality.
• Identify QC problems, troubleshoot, and resolve issues promptly.
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment according to established procedures and manufacturers' recommendations.
• Identify and address sample, instrument, or procedural issues.
• Orient and train new laboratory staff, including training bench personnel on new procedures or systems.
• Train MLS or MLT/CLT students in bench procedures, basic theory, and advanced skills, and help develop teaching and training tools.
• Actively participate in the continuing education program.
• Assist in outpatient/in-patient phlebotomies, specimen processing, non-patient registration, and requisition checks as needed.
• Determine appropriate phlebotomy techniques based on patient age and condition.
• Demonstrate knowledge of and comply with all hospital safety requirements.
• Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

• AS degree and a minimum of 4 years of Clinical Laboratory experience or a Bachelor's of Science Degree and a minimum of 2 years of Clinical Laboratory experience.
• Minimum of 2 years of relevant technical experience.
• Ability to work independently, adhere to deadlines, and manage changing volumes.
• Basic knowledge of computer software systems.
• Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT-AMT), Technologist/Specialist in Chemistry (C-ASCP), International Technologist in Microbiology (M-ASCP), Specialist in Hematology (SH-ASCP), or International Specialist in Microbiology (SM-ASCP) within 365 days of hire.
• BLS certification required within 30 days of hire.

Schedule

40 hours per week, day shift, Monday through Friday, with rotating weekends and occasional evening shifts.
