Medical Lab Scientist III

About the Role

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) III evaluates, assists in interpreting results, and analyzes blood and body fluids using both automated and complex manual methods. This role ensures the highest quality of laboratory results within established timeframes, following established policies and procedures. This is a night shift position.

Responsibilities

• Evaluates specimens for quality and preanalytical errors.
• Verifies results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.
• Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
• Provides guidance and direction to less experienced team members, only receiving guidance for the most complex procedures.
• Works independently within broad guidelines, assists with troubleshooting, and recommends solutions.
• Explains difficult or sensitive information in an easy-to-understand manner.
• Performs high-complexity testing and verifies instrument performance standards, including linearity, reportable range, and method comparisons.
• Demonstrates computer system proficiency in ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions.
• Ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies, and assists with inventory management.
• Communicates critical results to patient caregivers and provides guidance on potential sources of error or interfering substances.
• Utilizes theoretical knowledge and critical thinking to troubleshoot unusual situations and reports unresolved issues to the supervisor.
• Evaluates the accuracy of results considering preanalytical, analytical, and post-analytical sources of error.
• Assists in developing departmental policies and procedures for test performance, quality control, and preventative maintenance.
• Reports work activities, instrument issues, supply issues, and pending work at shift change to the oncoming MLS.
• Responds to work-related technical inquiries and assists in training new team members and students.
• Maintains regular, punctual attendance and compliance with Orlando Health policies and procedures.
• Performs specimen collection, receiving, and processing as required.
• Answers telephones, greets guests, and maintains current job knowledge to instruct students or other personnel.
• Plays an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program.
• Follows policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
• Practices infection control, safety, and maintains a clean, organized work area.
• Maintains confidentiality of patient records and departmental matters.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship.
• Two (2) years of experience required.
• Maintains current Florida license as a Medical Technologist certified in the specialty or specialties required by the assigned laboratory section(s).
• National Certification (e.g., ASCP, AAB, AMT) preferred.
