Medical Laboratory Scientist II- Chemistry & Hematology

About the role

This is a hospital-based position at HUMC performing test procedures of moderate/high complexity requiring independent judgement and responsibility in qualified specialties.

Schedule

Monday to Friday, 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM, with rotational weekends.

Pay

Pay range: $32.00 – $50.73 per hour; eligible for a 10% second-shift differential and a 15% third-shift differential on applicable hours. Salary offers consider skills, training, experience, education, certifications, and market/organizational factors. Eligible for an annual performance bonus.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate proficiency in all areas of testing and troubleshoot applicable instruments/procedures
• Support quality control, troubleshooting, customer support, instrument/equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement, and special projects
• Perform and report assigned analytical tests per Standard Operating Procedures, meeting quality-control requirements
• Support and comply with policies and procedures for specimen handling, test analysis, reporting, and record-keeping
• Maintain turnaround times, including STAT and critical results
• Verify reagent/test kit dates (received, expiration, opened)
• Perform and document QC analysis; make QC decisions regarding assay disposition
• Inform supervisory personnel of problems affecting test procedures
• Report deviations from standard testing procedures and cooperate with investigations
• Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System for physician review
• Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional, and sanitary condition
• Complete training and competency checklists; may assist with training others
• Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety requirements
• Use required PPE, engineering controls, and work practice controls
• Answer client or lab personnel questions as applicable
• Participate in regulatory agency inspections when needed
• Assume lead responsibilities in the absence of a Supervisor when qualified and delegated

Requirements

• One (1) year full-time experience or training in high-complexity testing in a clinical laboratory

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years clinical experience with the most current year in the present department

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Lifting/carrying: objects 1–10 lbs frequently; 11–25 lbs occasionally; 36–50 lbs seldom; over 50 lbs with assistance
• Ability to stand and work at the bench for long periods
• Frequent walking and/or standing
• Use of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments requiring significant manual dexterity

Knowledge

• Comprehensive theoretical and operational job knowledge in designated specialty
• Knowledge of organizational/departmental policies and procedures
• BS/BA in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology; or Associate degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology; or previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433
• Foreign-educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from IERF; U.S.-educated candidates must provide an original transcript

Education

• Associate Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology (preferred)
• Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Biology, or Chemistry (preferred)
