Medical Laboratory Scientist - Education & Safety (PT 64hrs/pp) 1st Shift

About the role

Individuals are responsible for performing diagnostic and analytic testing on human specimens to produce sound, reliable data to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients. This is a part-time position (64 hours per pay period) on the 1st shift.

Responsibilities

• Work in one or more laboratory disciplines under the supervision of the department manager, supervisor, senior technologist, or delegated in-charge individual.
• Demonstrate competencies specific to populations served for clinical or non-clinical roles dependent upon laboratory location.
• Operate and perform basic computer programs associated with documentation and record-keeping in the department.
• Understand and participate in all aspects of clinical laboratory testing: pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical.
• Anticipate and maintain required inventory (e.g., supplies, reagents) to ensure uninterrupted testing.
• Work under specific time constraints and communicate verbally and in writing at all levels inside and outside the organization.
• Reflect a positive attitude and abide by Bronson's Standards and Plan for Excellence.
• Follow all laboratory-established policies and procedures.
• Perform, validate, interpret, document, and report laboratory test results as determined by department assignment.
• Execute and evaluate quality control and quality assurance procedures; document and report as required by regulatory agencies.
• Perform internal and external proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.
• Identify problems that may adversely affect results and seek to resolve them appropriately.
• Assist in training, orienting, and touring new staff and students.
• Participate in Laboratory Quality Program activities.
• May be requested to alter start time, shift, department(s), and/or site depending on patient care needs.
• Perform other duties as assigned (e.g., charge tech, competency evaluations) if qualifications are met.
• Dependent on job duties, a valid Michigan driver's license and insurability through Bronson's carrier may be required.

Point of Care Responsibilities

• Perform training of non-lab testing personnel for point-of-care testing.
• Conduct competency assessments of non-lab testing personnel and document according to regulatory requirements.
• Demonstrate responsibility for all point-of-care instruments, including operation and preventative maintenance.
• Troubleshoot point-of-care equipment problems and resolve them either remotely or in person.
• Evaluate point-of-care quality control results utilizing quality assurance procedures.
• Prepare and process external proficiency samples for non-lab testing personnel to test in the same manner as patient samples.
• Manage and support hospital units with supply inventory to ensure uninterrupted testing.
• Operate computer middleware programs managing point-of-care analyzer interfaces, personnel management, and test result management.

Requirements

• Be enrolled in a NAACLS-accredited Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or Clinical Lab Science equivalent program for a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university and graduate within 60 days of hire.
• OR completion of a NAACLS-approved Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or Clinical Lab Science equivalent program with a Bachelor's degree.
• OR Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology WITH a completed certificate for a program (e.g., post-baccalaureate, hospital-based internship) in Medical Technology (MT) or Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) requiring 90 semester credit hours plus an internship.
• OR Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college including courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics WITH an appropriate internship AND completed Associate's Degree or completed Undergraduate Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology from a regionally accredited college/university with ASCP, AMT, or equivalent MLS eligibility.
• OR Bachelor's Degree in Biology or Chemistry WITH an appropriate internship AND completed Associate's Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a regionally accredited college/university with ASCP categorical certification/eligibility as Technologist in one or more of the following: (BB), (C), (H), or (M).
• All individuals must have completed certification OR be registry-eligible and complete certification within one year of hire through ASCP, AMT, or equivalent credential in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology. Individuals newly ASCP-certified after January 1, 2004, or newly AMT-certified after January 1, 2006, must maintain ongoing certification.
• Foreign-educated candidates must provide a detailed equivalency evaluation to include a U.S. equivalent degree.
• Ability to work irregular hours, including mandatory overtime, holidays, weekends, and on-call hours.
• Regularly lift bulky or moderately heavy weights (up to 45 pounds) and occasionally assist with heavier tasks.
• Work in an environment with exposure to noxious fumes, unpleasant noises, chemicals, and biological materials.
• Produce high levels of mental/visual fatigue due to interactive, repetitive, or detailed work requiring sustained alertness and concentration.

Schedule

Part-time, 32 scheduled weekly hours (64 hours per pay period). 1st shift.

Working Conditions

• May have direct patient contact when collecting or processing specimens.
• Exposure to noxious fumes, unpleasant noises, chemicals, and biological materials.
• Risk of sustaining illness or injury from the use of chemicals and biological organisms.
• Irregular hours, including mandatory overtime, holidays, weekends, and on-call hours.
• High levels of mental and visual fatigue due to detailed, repetitive work requiring sustained concentration (e.g., operating a personal computer up to 90% of the time).
• Regularly lifting up to 45 pounds and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks.
• Minor straining, fatiguing positions, and repetitive physical motions.
