Medical Laboratory Scientist - Education & Safety (PT 64hrs/pp) 1st Shift

Location: Bronson Methodist Hospital (BMH)

Schedule: Part time, 64 hours per pay period, 1st shift (32 scheduled weekly hours)

About the Role

Individuals are responsible for performing diagnostic and analytic testing on human specimens to produce sound, reliable data that aids in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients. This position may work in one or more laboratory disciplines and be supervised by the department manager, supervisor, senior technologist, or delegated in-charge individual.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate competencies specific to populations served for clinical or non-clinical settings, dependent upon laboratory location.
• Operate and perform basic computer programs associated with documentation and record keeping in the department.
• Understand and participate in all aspects of clinical laboratory testing: pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical.
• Anticipate and maintain required inventory (e.g., supplies, reagents) to ensure uninterrupted testing.
• Work under specific time constraints and communicate verbally and in writing at all levels inside and outside the organization.
• Reflect a positive attitude and abide by Bronson's Standards and Plan for Excellence.
• Follow all laboratory-established policies and procedures.
• Perform instrument operation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control/quality assurance procedures as required by regulatory agencies.
• Perform, validate, interpret, document, and report laboratory test results, determined by department assignment.
• Perform internal and external proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.
• Identify problems that may adversely affect results and seek to resolve appropriately.
• Assist in training, orienting, and touring new staff and students.
• Participate in Laboratory Quality Program activities.
• May be requested to alter start time, shift, department(s), and/or site depending on patient care needs.
• Perform other duties as assigned (e.g., charge tech, competency evaluations) if qualifications are met.
• Dependent on job duties, a valid Michigan driver's license and insurability through Bronson's carrier may be required.

Point of Care Responsibilities

• Perform training of non-lab testing personnel for point of care testing.
• Conduct competency assessment of non-lab testing personnel and document according to regulatory requirements.
• Demonstrate responsibility for all point of care instruments, including operation and preventative maintenance.
• Troubleshoot point of care equipment problems and resolve either remotely or in person.
• Evaluate POC quality control results utilizing quality assurance procedures.
• Prepare and process external proficiency samples for non-lab testing personnel to test in the same manner as patient samples.
• Manage and support hospital units with supply inventory to ensure uninterrupted testing.
• Operate computer middleware programs managing point of care analyzer interfaces, personnel management, and test result management.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Enrolled in a NAACLS-accredited Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or Clinical Lab Science equivalent program for a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university and graduate within 60 days of hire.
• OR completion of a NAACLS-approved Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or Clinical Lab Science equivalent program with a Bachelor’s degree.
• OR Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology WITH a completed certificate (e.g., post-baccalaureate, hospital-based internship) in Medical Technology (MT) or Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) requiring 90 semester credit hours plus internship.
• OR Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college including courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics WITH appropriate internship AND completed Associate’s Degree or Undergraduate Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology from a regionally accredited college/university with ASCP, AMT, or equivalent MLS eligibility.
• OR Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or Chemistry WITH appropriate internship AND completed Associate’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a regionally accredited college/university with ASCP categorical certification/eligibility as Technologist in one or more of the following: (BB), (C), (H), or (M).
• All individuals must have completed certification OR be registry-eligible and complete certification within one year of hire through ASCP, AMT, or equivalent credential in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology. Newly ASCP-certified individuals after January 1, 2004, or newly AMT-certified individuals after January 1, 2006, must maintain ongoing certification.
• Foreign-educated candidates must provide a detailed equivalency evaluation to include a U.S. equivalent degree.
• Visa sponsorship is not available for laboratory medicine positions.
• Two years of MLS experience preferred for Point of Care roles.

Working Conditions

• May have direct patient contact when collecting or processing specimens.
• Work in an environment with exposure to noxious fumes, unpleasant noises, chemicals, and biological materials/organisms.
• Work irregular hours, including mandatory overtime, holidays, weekends, and on-call hours.
• High levels of mental/visual fatigue due to interactive, repetitive, or detailed work requiring sustained alertness and concentration (e.g., operating a personal computer up to 90% of the time).
• Regularly lift bulky or moderately heavy weights (up to 45 pounds) and occasionally assist with heavier tasks or equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or handling material, equipment, and other objects.
• Work may involve minor straining, fatiguing positions, or physical motions.
