Responsibilities
- Performs, evaluates, records, and reports clinical laboratory tests used in the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of patients on a variety of body fluids and biologic specimens.
- Recognizes problems and/or potential issues within the assigned section regarding instruments, computers, and inventories.
- Displays sound, supportive, and independent judgment to resolve issues equitably (Technician) or in the absence of a supervisor (Technologist).
- Assumes charge of the laboratory (if charge-eligible) as assigned (Technologist only).
- Trainees without a permit may observe, read procedures, and learn processes but may not verify any testing on patients. They may assist with specimen processing, send-outs, and phlebotomy.
- Once a permit is obtained, candidates may verify tests in areas where competency has been completed.
Requirements
Medical Lab Technician
- Minimum Education: Current and active NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technician license.
- Minimum Experience: Experience preferred, but newly qualified individuals will be considered.
- Required Certification/Registration: ASCP preferred. NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technician license or eligible required. If not licensed, a NYSED permit is required within two months of hire, and a full license within one year of permit issuance.
Medical Lab Technologist
- Minimum Education: Current and active NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technologist license. To be charge-eligible, 4 years of experience post-license issuance is required.
- Minimum Experience: Experience preferred, but newly qualified individuals will be considered.
- Required Certification/Registration: ASCP preferred. NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technologist license or eligible required. If not licensed, a NYSED permit is required within two months of hire, and a full license within one year of permit issuance.
Physical and Working Conditions
- Physical Requirements: Walking, sitting, and standing for most of the day. Ability to reach, lift, and carry light to moderately heavy equipment and supplies. Requires visual acuity, color discrimination, and manual dexterity for handling laboratory instruments. Capable of working long hours at varied times, including evenings or weekends.
- Environmental Demands: Works in a clean, well-lit, heated, or ventilated facility with no routine exposure to hazards.
- Mental Demands: Ability to foster collaborative relationships, work under pressure, organize and synthesize information, and prioritize tasks. Requires critical thinking, analytical skills, flexibility, and the ability to multitask. Must demonstrate sensitivity to customer needs and handle interruptions in a fast-paced environment.
Pay
The compensation range for the following roles is as follows (hourly rates):
- Medical Lab Technician Trainee: $35.00 - $40.30
- Medical Lab Technician Permit: $39.37 - $45.33
- Medical Lab Technician Licensed: $46.72 - $53.49
- Medical Lab Technologist Trainee: $41.82 - $47.32
- Medical Lab Technologist Permit: $47.04 - $53.22
- Medical Lab Technologist Licensed: $55.81 - $62.86
