Responsibilities

• Performs, evaluates, records, and reports clinical laboratory tests used in the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of patients on a variety of body fluids and biologic specimens.
• Recognizes problems and/or potential issues within the assigned section regarding instruments, computers, and inventories.
• Displays sound, supportive, and independent judgment to resolve issues equitably.
• For Medical Lab Technologist roles: Assumes charge of the laboratory (if charge eligible) as assigned.

Qualifications

Medical Lab Technician

• Minimum Education: Current and active license as a NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technician.
• Minimum Experience: Experience preferred but newly NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technician qualified individuals considered.
• Required Certification/Registration: ASCP preferred. NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technician license or eligible required. If not licensed, NYSED permit required within two months of hire; NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technician license required within one year of permit issuance.
• Trainees without a Permit may observe, read procedures, and learn processes but may not verify any testing on patients. They may assist with specimen processing, send-outs, and phlebotomy. Once a Permit is obtained, candidates may verify tests in areas where competency has been completed.

Medical Lab Technologist

• Minimum Education: Current and active license as a NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technologist. To be considered charge eligible, candidates must have 4 years of experience post license issuance.
• Minimum Experience: Experience preferred but newly NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technologist qualified individuals considered.
• Required Certification/Registration: ASCP preferred. NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technologist license or eligible required. If not licensed, NYSED permit required within two months of hire; NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technologist license required within one year of permit issuance.

Skills & Physical Requirements

• Walking, sitting, and standing for most of the day.
• Reaches for, lifts, and carries light to moderately heavy equipment and supplies.
• Visual acuity and color discrimination required.
• Ability to communicate effectively and comprehend conversation.
• Manual dexterity and hand-to-eye coordination to handle and manipulate instruments, slides, test tubes, and other laboratory equipment.
• Capable of working long hours at varied times during the day or night, including evenings or weekends as needed.
• Alertness required during all phases of work.
• Demonstrates physical and functional ability to perform full anatomical range of motion.
• Evidence of visual and aural acuity and finger/hand dexterity to operate computer and office equipment.
• Ability to withstand long periods of sitting, standing, and/or constant walking.
• Ability to lift 10 lbs.
• Ability to foster collaborative relationships, work well under pressure, organize and synthesize new information, and prioritize tasks.
• Possesses critical thinking, analytical skills, and flexibility.
• Ability to multi-task and maintain detailed attention in an environment with uncontrolled interruptions.
• Demonstrates sensitivity to customer needs and expectations.

The compensation range provided complies with New York State law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The range does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits. Several factors may be considered when determining compensation, including location, specialty, service line, years of relevant experience, education, credentials, negotiated contracts, budget, and internal equity.

• Medical Lab Technician Trainee: $35.00 - $40.30 hourly
• Medical Lab Technician Permit: $39.37 - $45.33 hourly
• Medical Lab Technician Licensed: $46.72 - $53.49 hourly
• Medical Lab Technologist Trainee: $41.82 - $47.32 hourly
• Medical Lab Technologist Permit: $47.04 - $53.22 hourly
• Medical Lab Technologist Licensed: $55.81 - $62.86 hourly
