About the role
This position is under the direction of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) and adheres to regulatory requirements and accreditation standards. It involves performing clinical laboratory functions, including venipunctures, EKGs, and specimen processing.
Responsibilities
- Complies with Tahoe Forest Health System and Clinical Laboratory policies and procedures.
- Evaluates and solves problems with assistance from a CLS, if needed, or notifies management of unresolved operational issues.
- Performs moderate complexity and waived analytical tests, recognizes deviations from expected results, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision.
- Communicates effectively with CLS, nursing, physicians, and other ancillary staff to ensure effective patient preparation, specimen collection, test performance, and result reporting.
- Recognizes factors affecting measurements and results, analyzes QC data, makes judgments concerning the results, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision.
- Answers inquiries about abnormal test results, methodology, specificity, and sensitivity; addresses questions about specific factors influencing test results.
- Operates and maintains instruments/equipment, recognizes equipment malfunctions, troubleshoots, and repairs as necessary. Notifies clinical departments when equipment is down and testing may be delayed. Arranges backup testing practices when appropriate to ensure safe patient care.
- Maintains current knowledge of patient safety and laboratory safety requirements. Ensures health and safety requirements for patients and employees are achieved.
- Contributes to process improvement activities using lean principles and DMAIC approach to enhance operations. Evaluates new techniques and procedures in terms of method comparison, quality control, linearity studies, and writes/revises/provides technical procedures.
- Supports laboratory operations through telephone attendance, clerical duties, inventory management, customer service activities, specimen collection, sample handling, and specimen processing. May be assigned to train and mentor new personnel.
- Assists with POC duties including monitoring monthly QC from in-house and clinic locations, managing POC inventory, assisting with training and competencies, and performing on-site audits checking expiration dates and other compliance details.
- Schedules hours as necessary to meet the needs of laboratory operations.
Requirements
- California Medical Laboratory Technician License (MLT).
- Minimum education: Certificate of completion from college or vocational school or 60 semester units in a health science related discipline, including chemistry and biology.
- Required licenses/certifications: California Medical Laboratory Technician License (MLT).
- Preferred experience: Phlebotomy and EKG experience; operations experience in chemistry, hematology, serology, coagulation, and transfusion services; 2 years experience as an MLT.
