Medical Lab Technician or Medical Technologist

About the Role

This position involves performing laboratory analysis and technical duties in a medical laboratory setting. Two roles are available: Medical Lab Technician (MLT) and Medical Technician (MT). Both roles share core responsibilities, with additional supervisory expectations for the MT position.

Responsibilities

• Receives orders and obtains specimens for laboratory analysis by processing all specimens according to policy and procedure.
• Performs high complexity testing on specimens for all areas of the laboratory and accurately documents results.
• Provides technical assistance in all areas of the laboratory as outlined in departmental proficiency rating/certification sheets.
• Conducts and understands Quality Control (QC) procedures to ensure test accuracy and compliance; troubleshoots when QC is out of range.
• Performs daily maintenance and operates instrumentation to ensure precision and accuracy in specimen analysis; troubleshoots as needed.
• Performs proficiency survey testing and participates in continuous quality improvement projects.
• Performs EKGs as needed.
• Keeps records and reports results according to established procedures.
• May rotate on all shifts and perform front desk duties such as answering phones and registering outpatients.
• Practices and behaves in a professional, safe, and ethical manner at all times.
• Maintains friendly and courteous interpersonal communication skills and a positive service attitude.
• Participates in performance improvement and educational activities; completes all required CEUs for licensure.
• Maintains an active and current license if applicable.
• Works willingly and accepts assignments as given; attends all mandatory meetings and programs.
• Participates in opportunities that enhance personal and professional growth.
• Complies with Corporate Compliance Policy, all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct; reports suspected violations.
• Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations and JCAHO standards.

• Maintains confidentiality of patient, resident, employee, and organizational information.
• For MT role: Available for delegation of responsibility and capable of making supervisory decisions as designated by the Lab Manager in their absence; assists with training and guidance of assigned staff.

Requirements

Medical Lab Technician (MLT)

• Successful completion of at least 60 college-level credit hours, including 6 semester hours of Biology and 6 semester hours of Chemistry; no experience required.
• Certification/Licensure: CLA (ASCP) certification, or completion of an accredited MLT program or military med lab training course, or 3 years of acceptable clinical lab experience, or MLT Certification.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Effective time management skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.

Medical Technician (MT)

• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in science or medical technology; prior experience preferred.
• ASCP, AMT, or HEW registration preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient computer skills.
• Strong task management abilities.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.

Language Skills

• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to speak effectively before customers, patients, families, and employees of the organization.
• For MT role: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; ability to present information and respond to questions from managers, customers, patients, and the public.

Physical Demands

• Frequently required to stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
• Occasionally required to sit, talk, hear, and reach with hands and arms.
• Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Frequent computer work.
• May be exposed to infectious diseases, occupational hazards (e.g., accidental needle pricks), and physical/emotional stress.

Work Environment

• May be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and bloodborne pathogens.
• May be exposed to unpleasant sights, odors, and materials, including toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of radiation.
• May occasionally be exposed to high, precarious places and vibration.
• Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
