Medical Lab Technician

ENA has determined that in-office presence is an essential function due to the need for real-time collaboration with providers, direct interaction with patients and caregivers, and secure handling of health data in compliance with HIPAA.

About the Role

A Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) serves patients by identifying the best method for collecting specimens; accurately ordering and preparing specimens for laboratory testing; performing laboratory testing procedures as per training. Provides information for patient diagnosis and treatment by performing laboratory tests in toxicology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology laboratories, receiving, typing, and testing.

Responsibilities

• Collecting samples of blood and other substances (25%)
• Performing lab tests on samples and analyzing results (25%)
• Ensuring quality control of samples and adhering to laboratory standards and policies (25%)
• Operating lab equipment, such as microscopes and cell counters
• Resolving unusual test orders by contacting physicians, nursing personnel, or laboratory staff; referring unresolved orders back for clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders
• Logging test data into patients’ medical records (25%)
• Supporting Medical Technologists (MT) throughout laboratory operations
• Ensuring preparation of specimens for examination
• Conducting routine tests within clinical laboratories regarding treatment and diagnosis
• Utilizing precise laboratory equipment according to safety and organizational training
• Attending and completing in-service training as required
• Following all OSHA safety rules and regulations and participating in annual safety trainings
• Maintaining a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by complying with legal regulations

Requirements

• Minimum associate degree in laboratory or other related field, and a minimum of 2 years laboratory experience required (or a combination of education and experience)
• Preferred minimum 2 years phlebotomy experience
• Preferred experience with Orchard software, Laboratory Information Systems, and EPIC
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
• Experienced in quality control, quality improvement, instrument troubleshooting, and problem resolution in laboratory testing
• Prefer Siemens Atellica CI experience
• Knowledge of HIPAA and other compliance requirements

Physical Demands

• Required travel between sites

• Eyesight (corrected or uncorrected) to accurately read job-related materials and patient information
• High risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM)

Schedule

Work Schedule is Monday–Friday, 8 am to 5 pm with a one-hour lunch. Must be able to work overtime hours as needed.

Work Environment

• Typically performed in an interior/office work environment
• The noise level is usually quiet
• Occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch
• May need to travel if filling in for a phlebotomist at an external site
