Position Summary

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates specimens for quality and preanalytical errors
  • Verifies results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability
  • Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures
  • Provides guidance and direction to other team members with less experience
  • Works independently within broad guidelines, rather than prescribed procedures
  • Able to assist with troubleshooting problems and recommending possible solutions
  • Explains difficult or sensitive information in a manner that is easy to understand
  • Verifies instrument performance standards including linearity, reportable range, and method comparisons
  • Demonstrates computer system proficiency including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions
  • Ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies
  • Communicates critical results to the patient caregiver
  • Able to provide guidance on potential sources of error or interfering substances
  • Utilizes theoretical knowledge and critical thinking skills to help troubleshoot unusual situations; regularly reports unresolved issues to the immediate supervisor
  • Evaluates accuracy of results considering all phases of testing to include preanalytical, analytical, and post-analytical sources of error
  • Assists in the development of departmental policies and procedures for test performance, quality control, and preventative maintenance
  • Reports work activities, instrument issues, supply issues, and pending work at shift change to the oncoming MLS
  • Responds to work related technical inquiries
  • Maintains an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program
  • Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements
  • P Practices infection control and safety practices and keeps a clean and organized work area
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital and departmental matters at all times

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship
  • Two (2) years experience required based on area of assignment
  • Maintains current Florida license as a Medical Technologist certified in the specialty or specialties required by the laboratory section(s) assigned
  • National Certification such as American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), or American Medical Technologists (AMT) preferred
