Medical Lab Scientist I - Cell Manipulation Core Facility

The Randi and Brian Schwartz Family Cancer Immunotherapy and Cell Manipulation Facility at the Cancer Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is seeking a Medical Lab Scientist I to manufacture and process cellular immunotherapy products for patient care in both standard therapy and clinical trials. The Schwartz Family Facility is a state-of-the-art GMP-compliant laboratory that accelerates the development and delivery of novel immunotherapies, including experimental cancer vaccines and CAR-T cell therapies.

About the role

Under the direction of a Medical Lab Scientist II or lab manager, you will manufacture and process minimally manipulated clinical human therapeutic cellular products within an ISO Class 7 clean room, adhering to established standard operating procedures, applicable regulations, and safety guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine testing, specimen preparation, and evaluation of test results, including manual cell counts, viability assessments, immunohistochemistry staining, and sterility testing.
• Review and evaluate test results, QC, and calibration data for acceptability before reporting patient results.
• Ensure accuracy of test results by evaluating, entering, and maintaining records both manually and electronically; report critical/urgent results to providers per laboratory policies.
• Document production operations in batch records and log sheets according to cGMPs and SOPs.
• Perform general lab maintenance, including equipment sanitization and environmental monitoring of work areas.
• Participate in the evaluation of new methods, procedures, and instruments, and assist in developing technical SOPs under laboratory leadership.
• Conduct and document start-up, quality control, calibration, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting of instruments and equipment.
• Report facility and equipment failures or alarms to management and respond promptly to emergency calls for critical equipment issues.
• Assist with inventory management, maintain lab stock of reagents and supplies, manage safety records, and ensure proper storage conditions.
• Contribute to publications, presentations, and proposals; present research findings at lab meetings, journal clubs, and seminars.
• Assist in orienting and training new staff or students on lab procedures and techniques.
• Participate in continuing education, competency assessments, and proficiency testing to stay current in laboratory medicine.
• Adhere to all laboratory safety, infection control, and OSHA guidelines.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Life Sciences, or Medical Technology.
• 0–1 years of related work experience.
• Experience with computer systems, including web-based applications and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access).
• Strong organizational, detail-oriented, and communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage defined research projects.

Preferred Qualifications

• ASCP registration.
• Completion of a clinical laboratory medicine rotation, practicum, or equivalent experience.
• Competencies in decision-making, problem-solving, written and oral communication, and customer service.

Skills

• Ability to follow established procedures with minimal supervision and seek assistance for unpredictable situations.
• Full working knowledge of standard laboratory concepts, practices, and policies.
• Proficiency in documenting and maintaining accurate records.

Pay

$37.00 – $49.80 per hour. The pay range reflects the base hourly wage and may include shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime, and other applicable pay practices as determined by law and organizational policy.

Schedule

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently. The role involves standing for periods of time, moving throughout the hospital campus, and may include sedentary tasks.
