Medical Interpreter - Haitian

About the role

Responsible for facilitating the successful delivery of services to patients and family members of various languages. Collaborates with qualified auxiliary interpreters to accommodate interpretation requests and provides translation services (sight and written) for pertinent patient materials, including pre-operative, post-operative, discharge instructions, patient education, and follow-up care.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a mediator to enhance communication between staff and patients/family regarding medical care, adhering to the standard code of ethics for medical interpreters.
• Document interpretation encounters, including location, duration, and purpose.
• Coordinate and train staff on the use of telephone language interpretation services and relevant equipment.
• Answer calls promptly and conduct interpretation in a professional manner.
• Demonstrate professional appearance, conduct, and promptness appropriate to each interpreted situation.
• Assist with appointment reminders, rescheduling, and scheduling or dispatching interpreters for assignments.
• Help limited English proficiency (LEP) patients navigate the hospital, including finding departments, understanding administrative forms, and connecting with social services.
• Place outbound calls to confirm appointment dates and times with scheduled patients.
• May be required to take on-call requests for emergencies at night and on weekends.
• Travel within Boston to other Mass Eye and Ear locations as needed.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Medical Interpreter Certificate required; National Medical Interpreter Certificate preferred.
• Healthcare and/or medical interpreting experience (2-3 years preferred).
• This role requires direct patient care.

Pay

$23.34 - $33.37/hour (Grade 5). Base pay is determined by skills, relevant experience, education, certifications, and other factors. Additional compensation may include differentials, premiums, bonuses, and comprehensive benefits.
