Medical Facility Surveyor

Remote position conducting surveys of long-term care (LTC) and/or non-LTC programs across the United States and its Territories. Non-LTC programs include Ambulatory Surgical Centers, Critical Access Hospitals, Acute Care Hospitals, End Stage Renal Disease facilities, Home Health, Hospice, EMTALA, Organ Procurement Organizations, and organ transplant centers. Candidates for Long Term Care Surveying must possess the Surveyor Minimum Qualifications Test (SMQT) qualification.

Responsibilities

• Conduct on-site surveys (Initial, Recertification, Revisit/Desk Audit, Complaint, Focus, and Pilot) in accordance with the State Operations Manual (SOM).
• Complete deficiency reports following the Principles of Documentation (PoD) and the HMS Master Writing Guide, ensuring deadlines and timeframes are met. Deficiencies must clearly link identified deficient practices with associated regulations.
• Document survey findings accurately and in detail using laptop or tablet technology.
• Report Immediate Jeopardy (IJ) or Condition-level findings, as well as Substandard Quality of Care (SQC), to Quality Assurance staff while adhering to deadlines.
• Coordinate with Quality Assurance staff to ensure survey findings are adequately documented and defensible before submission to CMS or SSA.
• Submit documentation according to established deadlines.
• Perform duties in alignment with HMS Core Values and applicable contract requirements.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of CMS and HMS policies, Medicare regulations, and CMS QSO memos regarding program, policy, and process changes.
• Identify opportunities for improvement in the survey process and communicate them to leadership.
• Accept survey assignments as directed by CMS and HMS, with extensive travel required. Travel arrangements are managed by the company, minimizing out-of-pocket expenses.

Requirements

• Experience completing CMS surveys is required.
• Required CMS training for the provider type(s) you are interested in surveying.
• Ability to critically think and make competent decisions.
• Ability to perform all facility-required tasks.
• Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Preference given to registered nurses (RNs), LPNs, licensed social workers, and dietitians.
• Surveyor Minimum Qualifications Test (SMQT) qualification for LTC surveyors.
• Licensed RN is preferred.
• Ability to pass a federal background check.
• Legally authorized to work in the U.S. without Visa sponsorship.
