Medical Director, Advanced Heart Failure

Maine Medical Center (MMC), the state’s largest tertiary care hospital with over 700 beds and a key teaching affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine, seeks a Director of the Advanced Heart Failure Section and Medical Director of the Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) Program. This position will oversee a comprehensive regional program offering advanced heart failure care, mechanical circulatory support (including temporary and durable VADs), and collaborative transplant services. The role also involves co-leading the institution’s cardiogenic shock and ECMO programs in collaboration with CV Critical Care and Cardiac Surgery Teams.

• Highest implanting LVAD Program in Northern New England
• Heart Transplant care provided via MMC Heart Transplant Shared Care Program with 4 cardiac transplantation centers in Boston, MA. Heart transplant recipients transition their post-transplant care back to Maine typically three months following transplant surgery. The MMC Heart Transplant Clinic cares for over 140 transplant recipients.
• Multidisciplinary clinics in Pulmonary Hypertension, Infiltrative Cardiomyopathy Clinic, Structural Heart, and Cardio-Oncology.
• Research & Innovation: The heart failure team is actively involved in multiple clinical trials with opportunities for PI leadership, program development, and scholarly output.
• State-of-the-art facilities: Practice in MMC’s new Malone Family Tower, featuring modern procedure environments, hybrid capabilities, and patient-centered design built for complex cardiovascular care.
• Integrated, Academic Environment: The MMC Portland campus is the hub for cardiovascular innovation across MaineHealth, with seamless collaboration among Heart Failure, Cardiac Surgery, Interventional Cardiology, Electrophysiology, and Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging.

Responsibilities

• Serve as Medical Director of the LVAD program, ensuring high-quality evaluation, implantation, inpatient management, and long-term follow-up for durable MCS patients.
• Collaborate with Surgical Director of LVAD Team and LVAD Project Manager to increase LVAD implant volumes.
• Provide strategic leadership for MMC’s system-wide Advanced Heart Failure Section, leading quality, safety, and operational efforts for the team.
• Strengthen multidisciplinary collaboration across the cardiovascular service line.
• Mentor faculty, fellows, residents, students, and APPs.
• Direct teaching role within the Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship and mentoring medical students from the Maine Medical Center-Tufts University School of Medicine Program (Tufts-Maine Track).
• Academic appointment at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Qualifications

• MD or DO with board certification in Cardiovascular Disease and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology
• Minimum 5 years of clinical experience in heart failure cardiology
• Demonstrated leadership in clinical or academic settings
• Eligible for medical licensure in the State of Maine
• Commitment to excellence in patient care, education, and team collaboration

Pay

The annual base salary range for this position is $620,000-$645,000. Total compensation packages may include, based on eligibility, recruitment payments, relocation assistance, productivity incentives, and quality incentives.
