Minimum qualifications for this role include a Medical Coding Certification through AAPC or AHIMA, working knowledge of medical billing and terminology, and familiarity with HIPAA regulations. Candidates must type at least 35 words per minute with proficiency in 10-key, demonstrate excellent time management and attention to detail, and work effectively both independently and collaboratively. A valid driver’s license is required, along with the ability to pass a background check and drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Assign accurate ICD-10 and HCPCS codes according to clinical documentation and official coding guidelines for ambulance services.
  • Review modifiers to ensure correct origin and destination locations.
  • Monitor assigned work queues to process records timely while meeting productivity standards.
  • Verify accuracy of patient demographic and insurance information.
  • Validate required signatures before claim submission.
  • Maintain knowledge of insurance and special handling requirements for ambulance coding.
  • Protect patient confidentiality and adhere to patient rights.
  • Ensure all work complies with official coding guidelines and regulatory standards.
  • Stay current with industry standards and align organizational coding practices accordingly.
  • Understand and work toward revenue cycle key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Support a patient-centered, team-focused, and fiscally responsible organization.
  • Communicate trends and process improvement opportunities with team members and leaders.
  • Conduct yourself professionally in alignment with EMSA’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies and maintain integrity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, with punctuality and consistent attendance required.

Skills

Physical Demands

  • Frequent hearing, talking, and visual clarity up to 20 feet for interpreting job functions.
  • Occasional lifting, pulling, or pushing of objects up to 25 lbs in all directions.

Work Environment

  • Primarily office-based, involving prolonged desk work with repetitive wrist, hand, and finger motions.
  • Limited exposure to external environmental conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, snow).
