Medical Assistant- Walk-In - NEMG

Overview

Responsible for assisting physicians/providers with patient care, rooming patients, and performing clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. Responsible for appointment scheduling and chart management. Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the practice services. Conveys a positive image of the practice.

Responsibilities

• Performs patient care responsibilities including: identifying self to patient/family and explaining roles of care delivery team members; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; preparing patients for visit (vital signs, height, weight, blood pressure, EKG, specimen collection, phlebotomy, INR, pulse oximetry, spirometry, etc.); documenting medical/surgical history, family history, social history, problem list, and medications in EPIC; performing screenings per physician/provider guidelines; assisting physicians/providers with procedures; obtaining pre-authorizations when necessary; conveying instructions to patients/family members/caregivers; providing appropriate resource materials and referrals as instructed; maintaining patient records effectively; managing and routinely checking EPIC in-basket; answering and returning calls promptly with pertinent information
• Performs administrative responsibilities including: sending/receiving patient medical records and abstracting new patient records into EPIC; obtaining lab/radiology reports, hospital notes, and referral information as requested; completing forms/requisitions as needed; cross-training on front desk duties (greeting patients/visitors, answering calls, scheduling appointments, maintaining/scanning patient medical records)
• Performs environmental responsibilities including: setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocol; applying principles of infection control; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits; cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program with appropriate documentation; ordering, sorting, and storing supplies following department policy
• Performs other organizational duties including: maintaining patient autonomy, confidentiality, and dignity; ensuring providers submit timely and accurate billing; maintaining knowledge of practice policy, HIPAA, current coding, OSHA regulations and CLIA regulations; providing prompt attention to urgent and non-urgent patient issues; quickly sharing problems with supervisor; working with Care Coordinator for Patient Centered Medical Home initiatives; attending and actively participating in staff meetings; collaborating in development and delivery of health promotion programs; contributing to individual team and department quality improvement and evaluation activities; advocating for vulnerable individuals and populations; contributing to a work environment fostering ongoing educational experiences; collaborating in developing a work environment where continuous quality improvements are pursued; utilizing appropriate methods for interacting effectively with persons of all ages and diverse backgrounds; coordinating efforts to gain patient and family feedback regarding healthcare experiences and participating in interventions addressing articulated needs
• May assist and/or perform chaperone duties for patient medical procedures as needed
• May perform other duties as required

Qualifications

• Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Must meet one of the following: graduation from an accredited medical assistant (MA) certificate program or Phlebotomy program, certification as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), emergency medical technician (EMT), or paramedic. Employees who join through merger or acquisition may satisfy educational requirements by demonstrating appropriate combination of education, relevant experience, and current competencies.
• Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a medical assistant (MA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), emergency medical technician (EMT), ambulatory care associate (ACA), patient care associate/technician (PCA/PCT), paramedic, or phlebotomist required. New graduates from an accredited medical assistant certificate program with less than one (1) year of experience will be considered.
• Licensure: Certification/registration (CCMA/CMA/AAMA/RMA) preferred. Certification/registration may be accepted in lieu of graduation from an accredited MA school. Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred.
