Medical Assistant Trainee (CMA) - Earn While You Learn Program

About the Program

The UVA Earn While You Learn Trainee Program provides structured coursework and paid on-the-job-training as a full-time, benefitted employee. All Earn While You Learn programs are based in Charlottesville, VA and surrounding counties. We are currently reviewing applications for October 2026.

What You'll Do

Certified Medical Assistants perform a variety of patient care and administrative support functions under the supervision of Medical Center professionals in an ambulatory or outpatient setting.

• Performs basic clinical skills, as delegated by licensed medical professionals and in accordance with policy and procedure, to promote patient health and wellness
• Identifies patients prior to assisting with any intervention
• Assists with the collection of patient vital signs and weights and documents accordingly
• Assists with the patient rooming process and documents in the electronic medical record including setting specific patient screenings
• Promptly reports abnormal findings and changes in patient condition to the registered nurse, licensed independent professional, or preceptor
• Assists with patient mobility using safe lifting equipment and following mobility standard operating procedures for safe transfer and positioning practices
• Assists providers and clinical team with general patient care, including assisting with physical assessments, examinations, and procedures
• Assists with preparing examination/procedure room
• Assists with preparing and maintaining sterile fields
• Assists with patient procedure preparation
• Assists with obtaining labels and sending/transporting specimens for diagnostic testing
• Observes environment for safety patient and team member safety hazards and immediately reports potential hazards
• Observes and adheres to organizational safety policies and procedures including but not limited to sharps handling and management of biohazardous materials
• Cleans equipment and performs safety checks as needed and per protocol
• Promptly reports safety and quality incidents involving patients, staff, and/or visitors to a licensed medical professional or supervisor using the institution's quality reporting process
• Demonstrates knowledge of the institution's fire/emergency/infection control programs
• Performs administrative support functions
• Completes supply stocking, inventory, and ordering as needed
• Maintains necessary skills and competencies
• Identifies strengths and opportunities for professional development and goals for self-improvement
• Completes annual mandatory training activities and regulatory in-service requirements within established timeframes
• Maintains attendance and engagement with formal education program
• Demonstrates teamwork in the delivery of patient care
• Recognizes the importance of time sensitive issues
• Assumes responsibility for professional development of self and others according to departmental policy

Minimum Requirements

• Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent
• Experience: No experience required
• Licensure: No licensure/certifications are required to apply to this role

Physical Demands

Job requires frequent bending and stooping; proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; attention to detail and ability to write legibly; ability to lift/push/pull 20 – 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

Compensation

• During training: $16.00/hour + benefits
• Upon successful completion of training: $19.80/hour + benefits
• You will be paid a total of 40 hours/week
• All course and certification fees will be paid for by UVA Health in return for 1 year FULL-TIME commitment as an employee at UVA Health once course is completed
