Location: Yorktown, Virginia

Hiring Range: $18.90 – $24.60 per hour. Actual pay is determined based on job‑related factors such as relevant experience, education, credentials, skills, internal equity, and business needs.

About the role

The Medical Assistant is responsible for a variety of patient care, technical, and clerical functions under the direct supervision of the physician and practice manager. They maintain clinic patient flow by assisting members of the patient care team and providing a wide range of health care services while supporting quality and safe care. The role may float to other clinics or practices within the region as needed.

Responsibilities

• Maintains excellent clinical competency by adhering to standard clinical expectations for Riverside Medical Group, including updating, verifying, and maintaining patient records by properly interviewing the patient and confirming purpose of visit.
• Prepares patient for examination by obtaining vital signs proficiently (including manual vital signs when mechanical devices are not available).
• Prepares and sanitizes exam rooms before and after patient appointments.
• Administers medications and vaccines under the supervision of a physician.
• Assists with processing prescription refill requests for approval and forwarding to pharmacies.
• Maintains medical inventory of supplies and keeps exam rooms stocked appropriately.
• Keeps necessary equipment in operating order and facilitates preventive maintenance when needed.
• Ensures compliance with healthcare regulations, including scope of practice, HIPAA, and OSHA standards.
• Completes all required competencies and education to maintain skill level to provide safe patient care.
• Acts as a liaison between physician and patient, providing support and comfort to patients and families during clinic visits and procedures, including chaperoning during sensitive examinations.
• Demonstrates excellent customer service, providing timely patient response and follow‑up by phone and electronic means.
• Manages patient expectations with clear explanations and effectively manages providers' patient schedules.
• Assists patients with access to care, appointments, referrals, and providing necessary information.
• Assists with patient education per protocol and direct provider instruction, including instructions in the after‑visit summary within the EMR.
• Exhibits knowledge of lab procedures, including specimen collection, phlebotomy, point‑of‑care testing, and use of ABNs (if applicable); properly processes, packages, and sends specimens to the correct laboratory; obtains preauthorization when needed; manages point‑of‑care logs and documents testing accurately in the EMR.
• Follows insurance carrier guidelines and Medicare regulations; maintains working knowledge of ICD‑9 and CPT coding and seeks assistance as needed; obtains prior authorizations when needed; schedules tests and specialist visits within network limitations.
• Supports productivity goals to maximize use of facility resources to meet patient demand and maximize physician visits so that productivity targets are met.
• Assists and contributes to meeting quality measures for the organization.

Qualifications

• Education
  • High School Diploma or GED, high school or equivalent (Required)
  • Program Graduate, Medical Assistant (Required)
• Experience
  • Less than 1 year clinical experience (Preferred)
• Licenses and Certifications
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) within 1 year (Preferred)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists (AMT) within 1 year (Preferred)
  • CPR/BLS Certification – American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) upon hire (Required)
