About the role
The Medical Assistant (MA) role is assigned duties and responsibilities related to patient care and administrative support in a team-based environment while promoting a smooth flow of patients through the office. The Medical Assistant MA role functions under the license of the physician/advanced practice practitioner when performing clinical and other patient care responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Assist with patient care activities under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider.
- Perform routine clinical procedures as directed by a licensed healthcare provider.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider.
- Manage patient records and maintain accurate documentation.
- Communicate effectively with patients and their families to ensure understanding of medical instructions and procedures.
- Coordinate patient appointments and manage scheduling.
- Provide administrative support to the healthcare team, including answering phones, managing mail, and maintaining office supplies.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED preferred.
- Must meet one of the following requirements: Graduated from an accredited vocational institution or community college in Medical Assisting with 160 hours of clinical experience completed; or completion of an Adult Education Medical Assistant program and 6 months of clinical experience in a practice setting; or 1 year of clinical experience in a multi-provider practice setting (equivalent experience will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis).
- Current AAMA, NHA, AMT, or NCCT certification required. (Prior to 5/01/25 MA IIs with 10 years MA experience and employed by MaineHealth as a MA in the most recent 5 years are exempt from certification requirement).
- Current BLS certification required or must obtain within 30 days of start date.
- A NH Med Tech License, or NH EMT and National Registry EMT license is required for those positions located in New Hampshire.
- Six months of experience as a Medical Assistant or one year as a MaineHealth Clinical Team Assistant.
