About the role
This position is responsible for assisting clinicians and nursing staff in providing medical care, as well as implementing and evaluating direct patient care. The role utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills to provide an excellent patient experience.
Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for exam and treatment by taking and recording vital signs, symptoms, and other necessary measurements; document chief complaint and pain scores as appropriate.
- Report changes in patient condition that may indicate a change in health status to the clinician.
- Assist providers with exams and minor in-office procedures, including taking blood pressure, documenting respiration and heart rate/pulse, taking temperature, performing phlebotomies, ear irrigation, and EKGs.
- Act as chaperon as needed and use universal blood and body fluid precautions and personal protective equipment.
- Prioritize and manage patient flow through the clinical process.
- Coordinate and manage patient care including pre-certifications, referrals, authorizations, prescriptions, and scheduling for clinic, hospital, and ancillary medical treatments/tests.
- Communicate test results to patients and act as a resource to clinicians to provide optimal patient care.
- Administer medications in accordance with established policies and procedures or as directed.
- Provide clerical support including patient notifications and documentation such as complete medical records (labs, authorizations, X-rays, hospital records, and previous care).
- Provide accurate information necessary for billing related to patient encounters in a timely fashion.
- Maintain a clean, functional environment including cleaning and disinfection of equipment, exam rooms, and storage areas; disinfect equipment and instruments using appropriate solutions and follow sterilization procedures.
- Follow manufacturer recommendations and OSHA guidelines in handling hazardous substances; perform basic maintenance of equipment and coordinate needed repairs.
- Order and stock supplies; manage medication ordering and related tasks (e.g., expired medications/equipment and recalls).
- Develop and maintain effective communication with internal and external customers; exemplify service orientation and teamwork in all contacts.
- Complete onboarding/orientation activities, including simulation training as needed or directed.
- Work under the direct supervision of providers and interact with staff across departments, physicians, patients, families, and external contacts regarding patient care.
- Prioritize data from multiple sources to support patient and family responses to changes in health status.
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
- Completion of an approved medical assistant training program as defined by state regulations.
- Active Medical Assistant Certification required, meeting Meaningful Use requirements.
- BLS certification required.
- Acceptable certifications include: RMA (AMT), CMA (AAMA), CCMA (NHA, test administered after 7/1/2017 only), or NCMA (NCCT).
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency with medical software.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple changing priorities in an effective and organized fashion.
- For roles at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, and BUMG, BUMCT, or BUMCS in a Behavioral Health clinical setting serving children: Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at hire and maintained for duration of employment; Arizona Criminal History Affidavit signed upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with office medical procedures and treatments.
- Knowledge of insurance, managed care operations, EMR, and scheduling software.
