About the Role

The Primary Care Patient Care Medical Assistant (MA) works directly with Mercy Primary Care Providers to deliver safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered care. This role partners with patients, providers, and the clinical care team to drive quality outcomes. The position supports Mercy Clinic at Work, an employer-based clinic located at Worldwide Technology (WWT) in Edwardsville, serving WWT employees, spouses, and dependents. The MA will collaborate with a Physician, Registered Nurse, and another Medical Assistant in a Primary Care/Urgent Care hybrid setting.

Responsibilities

Clinical Support

  • Prepare patients for provider visits by:
    • Recording chief complaints
    • Obtaining vital signs
    • Reviewing medical history and allergies
    • Performing medication reconciliation
    • Completing Advanced Standard Rooming processes
    • Addressing preventative care gaps, including fall risk assessments, depression screenings, cancer screenings, diabetic eye exams, and rechecking elevated blood pressure readings
  • Administer vaccines and injections within scope of practice.
  • Assist with in-office testing, including:
    • Phlebotomy/blood draws
    • EKGs
    • Mental status examinations
    • Walking oxygen studies
    • Point-of-care testing
  • Manage triage and in-basket responsibilities, including:
    • Reviewing and following up on test results
    • Responding to MyMercy messages
    • Processing medication refill requests

Population Health & Employer Wellness Support

  • Represent Mercy at WWT wellness events and health fairs.
  • Provide blood pressure screenings, flu shot clinics, and support other employer wellness initiatives.
  • Assist with annual wellness screening campaigns by collecting vitals and completing employee screenings.

Administrative & Front Office Support

  • Perform EPIC charting, referral coordination, and event-related data entry.
  • Check patients in and update demographic and insurance information.
  • Obtain required forms and signatures.
  • Schedule patient appointments and manage incoming calls.
  • Communicate and route messages appropriately.
  • Monitor and adjust provider schedules as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program (preferred).
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification (preferred but not required).
  • One year of applicable patient care experience or medical office experience (preferred).
  • Experience with EPIC registration, scheduling, and patient data entry (preferred).
  • Strong clinical, organizational, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must maintain a professional, energetic, and customer-focused presence.
  • Flexibility to travel occasionally to the WWT clinic in Edwardsville, IL for wellness events or coverage needs (infrequent).
  • New hires must attend MA Clinic Academy training.
