Medical Assistant II - Orthopedic Surgery
About the role
This position works at the Sunset Hills location and involves patient care duties, communication and documentation, equipment and supplies management, and other functions.
Responsibilities
- Interacts directly with patients in clinic settings and completes clinical tasks, including obtaining vital signs, conducting EKGs, completing a phlebotomy, and verifying medications.
- Prepares for office hours by obtaining charts, scheduling tests, and preparing exam rooms.
- Aids in examinations, procedures, and lab tests.
- Assists with renewing and authorizing non-narcotic medications based on standing orders and department guidelines.
- Administers medications under physician or nurse practitioner orders, including vaccines and intramuscular/subcutaneous injections.
- Directs patient flow, assists with special procedures/treatments, and completes requisitions.
- Routes phone messages, patient questions, and telephone communications to appropriate personnel.
- Aids in care coordination by tasks outlined under department guidelines, such as calling patients with test results, scheduling appointments, assisting with return calls, scheduling surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and admissions, and monitoring new and return patient contacts, including scheduling appointments and follow-up appointments.
- Completes necessary paperwork and documentation in a timely manner.
- Answers basic questions from patients/families regarding treatments, diagnosis, and procedures.
- Maintains required HIPAA compliance, maintains skills/competencies, participates in in-services, staff programs, continuing education, and cross-training programs according to established standards and WashU policies.
- Complies with OSHA, state, and federal regulatory sources/standards.
- Participates in quality improvement activities to ensure appropriate clinical outcomes.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, and a Medical Assistant certification/registration from NHA, AAMA, or AMT. Basic Life Support certification is also required.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Required work experience: Six months of related work experience in fields such as military medic, emergency medical technicians, Nurse’s Aide, physical therapy, nurse technicians, and certified athletic trainers.
- Preferred qualifications: Graduate of an accredited nursing program (such as RN/LPN) or comparable allied health training program with a minimum of one year of relevant experience.
- Medical Assistant credentials must be obtained from in-person proctored exams from NHA, AAMA, or AMT.
- Basic Life Support certification (online proctored exams are not sufficient).
