Responsibilities
- Engage in population-appropriate communication and have knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
- Provide clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment and involve family/guardian in assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care.
- Identify physical limitations of patients and deploy necessary interventions.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
- Interpret population-related data and plan care appropriately.
- Identify and respond to unique psychological needs or those associated with religious/cultural norms.
- Perform treatments, administer medication, or operate equipment safely.
- Recognize and respond to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
- Obtain vital signs, EKGs, laboratory specimens, and other necessary information for patient evaluation while utilizing universal precautions.
- Assist providers in documenting notes, orders, and prescriptions in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Prepare and maintain the clinic area, including cleaning and stocking examination rooms, setting up and securing computer equipment, and maintaining diagnostic equipment.
- Return routine patient telephone calls such as prescription refills or pre-certification for medication, with appropriate and timely documentation.
- Coordinate ancillary services such as diagnostic testing/imaging, hospital procedures/admissions, additional patient visits, and acquisition of pertinent medical records.
- Maintain a positive, professional, and cooperative demeanor in all interactions with patients, staff, physicians, and management.
- Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
- Protect patient confidentiality and adhere to legal responsibilities and requirements of the medical assistant role.
- Seek knowledge and understanding of quality measures and patient experience.
- Perform administrative duties including using computer applications, answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patient medical records, coding and filling out insurance forms, scheduling appointments, arranging hospital admissions and laboratory services, handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping.
- Assist in implementing age-appropriate care for specific patient populations, including direct patient care as part of the clinical team.
Qualifications
Minimum Required: High School Diploma or GED.
Preferred: 7 - 11 months of equivalent experience.
