Examples of Duties

  • Laboratory: Performs capillary and venipuncture blood collection as needed.
  • Laboratory: Instructs patients on proper urine collection techniques.
  • Laboratory: Relays information to the patient regarding proper preparation for various lab tests.
  • Laboratory: Perform lab tests such as Urine pregnancy test, Glucose, Blood, Blood Count, Sedimentation rate, Cholesterol Screening Test.
  • Laboratory: Covers on the floor by assisting providers with rooming patients and taking vitals.
  • Laboratory: Assist providers with procedures, orders and referrals as needed.
  • Laboratory: Coordinates processing of lab samples to correct reference laboratory.
  • Laboratory: Data entry of patient information and test requisition preparation for samples sent to the reference lab.
  • Laboratory: Stock and order laboratory supplies - submit order form to Supervisor.
  • Laboratory: Ensure safety per OSHA Standards.
  • Laboratory: Communicate with hospitals and outside labs regarding missing information, mistakes or problems with lab samples and orders sent.
  • Direct Patient Care: Assists physicians in direct patient care, i.e., diagnostic and treatment procedures.
  • Direct Patient Care: Accesses the EHR to input, update, retrieve and review demographic, insurance and appointment information for established patients.
  • Direct Patient Care: Responsible to see patients in nurse only clinics under direct physician supervision for protocol driven patient care, i.e., medication administration, and weight checks.
  • Direct Patient Care: Administers and records in the EHR prescribed medications and immunizations by IM, subq, intradermal, and by mouth per SIU Guidelines, refills prescriptions under physician order.
  • Direct Patient Care: Responsible for monitoring and maintenance of clean, well equipped and supplied exam rooms.
  • Direct Patient Care: Responsible for monitoring and recording refrigerator temperatures twice daily to ensure proper storing temperatures for medications and vaccinations.
  • Direct Patient Care: Responsible for cleaning and sterilizing instruments and storing them properly.
  • Direct Patient Care: Assists in orientation and training of medical assistant students and new medical assistant staff.
  • Direct Patient Care: Responsible for ordering weekly laundry and proper sorting and storing when delivered.
  • Training: Assists in training residents in time management in the outpatient clinic setting.
  • Training: Assists in training residents in laboratory techniques.
  • Training: Assist in training other medical assistants for lab, clinic and receptions duties.
  • Qualifications

    • Credentials to be Verified by Placement Officer: High school graduation or equivalent.
    • Credentials to be Verified by Placement Officer: Possession of a current/valid medical assistant certification by an approved certifying board as defined by the employing institution.
    • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA’s): Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
    • Knowledge of basic first aid principles, methods, and techniques.
    • Knowledge of aseptic and sterilization techniques.
    • Knowledge of inventory procedures.
    • Knowledge of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
    • Skill in the operation of sterilizing equipment and maintaining appropriate documentation records.
    • Ability to make decisions based on urgency of the situation and in accordance with work procedures and hospital/clinic policies.
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
    • Willingness to, and skill in, dealing effectively with patients, hospital staff, and other persons from inside or outside hospital/clinic.
    • Ability to provide quality patient care and customer service.
