About the role

This position requires hours on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8am-5pm. The General Orthopedics clinic focuses on non-surgical orthopedic problems such as acute fractures, sprains, degenerative diseases, and more. Clinic staff assist providers to maintain a smooth clinic and ensure patient satisfaction through collaborative teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Transform healthcare by providing basic clinical care using technical skills for patients according to established standards and reporting patient observations to licensed staff.
  • Collects patient assessment data including height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint/symptoms, current medications, etc. for assessment by licensed staff.
  • Transports patients through office, prepares the patient for provider evaluation, obtains specimens, positions for exams, lists medications, and assists during exams and procedures.
  • Maintains work area, exam treatment and x-ray rooms, and lab in a clean, safe manner; restocks with supplies and instruments; and sterilizes reusable equipment as needed.
  • Documents patient information in the medical record in a timely manner to include update treatment procedures, medication refills, test results, patient concerns, etc. in compliance with applicable Carilion Clinic policies and procedures.
  • Observes all safety precautions and standards.
  • Assists with lab procedures, including collecting urine specimens, collecting and preparing blood samples for reference lab, labeling all specimens with accurate patient ID as ordered by the physician.
  • May perform diagnostic tests (EKGs, audiograms, vision testing, spirometry) as appropriate for assessment by licensed staff.
  • Aids in referral authorizations for specialists and pre-authorization for testing and ancillary services as directed by licensed staff, provider, or mid-level practitioner.
  • Greets patients and assists with check-in/check-out procedures.
  • Updates patient demographic information.
  • Answers phones; schedules appointments; and relays messages.
  • Utilizes automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
  • May administer oral and parenteral medications.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience: None.
  • Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Medical Assistant Certification through a recognized national professional association such as, the American Association of Medical Assistants, the American Medical Technologists, The National Association of Healthcare Professions, the American Registry of Medical Assistants, or the National Healthcare Association. May be hired on a provisional status once the applicant receives the letter confirming they have taken the certification exam and have a provisional passing score.
  • Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required.
