About the Role

The Medical Assistant functions within their skill set in providing patient care as delegated by the clinic LPN/RN, physician, or mid-level provider (APP). This role requires strong organization, professionalism, excellent customer service, attention to detail, multitasking efficiency, critical thinking, and the ability to perform in a fast-paced work environment.

Responsibilities

• Follows established hospital policy regarding patient safety measures such as infection prevention, safe patient handling and movement, and notification of the licensed nurse when patient condition changes.
• Provides direct interaction with patients, including escorting patients to rooms, obtaining vital signs, performing EKGs, verifying medications, allergies, past medical/surgical/family history, and documenting accurate information in the patient chart.
• Routes phone messages, patient questions, and telephone communications to appropriate personnel.
• Acts as a liaison between physician/APP and patient, including calling patients with test results and assisting with physician return calls.
• Assists with renewal and authorization of medications and administers medications (oral, IM, and SQ) as ordered.
• Performs point-of-care lab testing and obtains blood samples and other specimens for lab testing as ordered.
• Schedules appointments, surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and admissions as ordered by the physician, and completes necessary paperwork, prior authorizations, referrals, and documentation.
• Monitors supply inventory, ensures adequate supplies, and cleans and stocks exam areas.
• Informs and sets up patients and/or guardians for MyChart at the time of service and educates them on its benefits.
• Assists in orienting and training new medical assistants.
• Meets commitments, works independently, accepts accountability, handles change, sets personal standards, stays focused under pressure, and meets attendance/punctuality requirements.

Requirements

• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant or Medical Specialist program or equivalent working experience as a Medical Assistant or Registered/Certified Medical Assistant.
• High school diploma.
• One-year Medical Assistant or other medical specialist experience preferred but not required; medical clinic experience preferred.
• Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through an approved accrediting organization (e.g., American Medical Technologist) preferred.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required.

Mental/Physical Requirements

• Considerable mental concentration required.
• Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities, and nearly constant walking.
• Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

• Frequent exposure to infectious disease and occasionally hostile persons.
• Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids.
• Minimal physical discomfort.
