Medical Assistant

About the role

The Medical Assistant provides assistance to licensed medical providers in clinic and surgical settings, delivering safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, and individualized care to all patients.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a patient advocate during patient exams and treatments.
• Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure vital signs, weight, and height.
• Escort patients to examination, procedure, or operative rooms and prepare them for the physician.
• Record patients' medical history, medications, allergies, vital statistics, and test results in medical records.
• Ensure proper consent forms are obtained prior to preparing a patient for treatment.
• Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician, following safety protocols (right dose, right patient, right route, right drug, noting expiration date).
• Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log them, and prepare them for testing.
• Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, wound care instructions, and physicians' instructions to patients.
• Assist physicians during examinations and treatments, including handing instruments, giving injections, and removing sutures.
• Authorize drug refills under provider direction and provide prescription information to pharmacies.
• Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, ensuring rooms are neat and clean.
• Inspect sterile items before opening and organize supplies on the sterile field.
• Assist physicians with surgical procedures while maintaining a sterile field.
• Assess the patient’s condition throughout exams, procedures, or surgeries, notifying the physician and RN of any distress.
• Clean rooms and medical equipment between patients and at the end of the day.
• Correctly dispose of infectious waste and biohazard materials.
• Schedule patient appointments and change wound dressings.
• Greet patients arriving at the office or clinic.
• Contact medical facilities or departments to schedule tests or admissions for patients.
• Inventory and assess the need for instruments, supplies, and equipment, keeping rooms stocked.
• Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
• Document all procedures accurately and in a timely manner.
• Respond to emergency situations based on nursing standards, policies, and protocols, ensuring familiarity with equipment and supplies.
• Assist in medical emergencies for patients, employees, or visitors, ensuring proper documentation per facility policy.
• Inventory and order medical emergency supplies monthly and ensure all equipment is in proper working order.
• Adhere to all policies and procedures while supporting a culture of high quality and great customer service.
• Perform other duties as necessary or in the best interest of the organization.
