The Medical Assistant is responsible for a variety of patient care, technical, and clerical related functions and clinic patient flow by assisting members of the patient care team and providing a broad range of health care services. The role involves prepping patients for appointments, administering medications, completing health and medication documentation, obtaining vital signs, and maintaining a healthy and safe work environment.
Responsibilities
- Intake of all patient appointments, including taking vital signs, height and weight, confirming reason for visit, interviewing patients to document health history, preparing patients for examinations/interviews/procedures, and updating medication profiles prior to provider visits.
- Assist in evaluating patient responses to the plan of care and collaborate with the inter-professional team to adjust care as directed by the RN or provider.
- Coordinate care for patients across service lines within and outside of Signature Health to ensure excellent patient care.
- Complete appropriate documentation in the medical record to comply with state, federal, and departmental policies.
- Exhibit a non-judgmental, empathetic, and supportive approach when communicating with patients, families, and staff.
- Provide care that is safe, ethical, patient- and family-centered, culturally congruent, age-related, and evidence-based.
- Ensure quality of care by implementing nursing philosophies and standards, and enforcing adherence to state board of nursing requirements and other governing regulations.
- Administer medication under the direction of a Physician or Nurse Practitioner.
- Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log them, and prepare them for testing.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program required.
- 1+ years' experience in an ambulatory-based setting as a Medical Assistant preferred.
- Medical Assistant Certification required; certification completion required within 6 months of hire.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Knowledge and comfortability with vaccine administration; knowledge of OSHA, FDA, and CDC guidelines.
Working Conditions
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office/clinical environment.
- Flexibility to work evenings and extended hours may be required.
- Requires periods of sitting, standing, telephone, and computer work.
- Hearing and speaking abilities adequate for in-person, telephone, and telehealth interactions.
- Visual acuity sufficient for reading printed materials and computer screens.
- Occasional lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 15 pounds, unassisted.
- Possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens while performing job duties.
- Work may occur both indoors and outdoors, including in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
- Frequent use of personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.
- May be requested to work overtime and weekends for special program events.
- Ability to stand for long periods, frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, walking, squatting, and sitting.
- Sufficient dexterity to operate a PC and other office equipment.
