About the Role

The Medical Assistant role involves a variety of patient care, technical, and clerical functions. Key responsibilities include preparing patients for appointments, administering medications, documenting health and medication information, taking vital signs, and maintaining a safe work environment. The role also involves supporting the inter-professional team in adjusting care plans as needed and coordinating care across different service lines.

Responsibilities

  • Intake of all patient appointments, including vital signs, height and weight, confirming reasons for visits, interviewing patients, preparing patients for examinations, interviews, or procedures, and updating medication profiles during the rooming process before the provider visit.
  • Assist in evaluating patients' responses to treatment plans and collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to make necessary adjustments as directed by the RN or provider.
  • Coordinate care for patients across various service lines within and outside of Signature Health to ensure high-quality patient care.
  • Complete appropriate documentation in the medical record to comply with state, federal, and departmental policies.
  • Provide care that is safe, ethical, patient-centered, culturally sensitive, age-appropriate, and evidence-based.
  • Administer medications under the direction of a physician or nurse practitioner, collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log specimens, and prepare them for testing.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program required.
  • 1+ years' experience in an ambulatory-based setting as a Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Medical Assistant Certification required; certification must be completed within 6 months of hire.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Knowledge and comfortability with vaccine administration; knowledge of OSHA, FDA, and CDC guidelines.

Working Conditions

  • Work is typically performed in a typical interior/office/clinical work environment.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and extended hours may be required.
  • Requires periods of sitting, standing, telephone, and computer work.
  • Physical effort required: occasional lifting and carrying items weighing up to 15 pounds, unassisted.
  • May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens while performing job duties.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, and repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting, and sitting, with some lifting, pushing, and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular workday.
  • Sufficient dexterity to operate a PC and other office equipment.
