POSITION SUMMARY
The Medical Assistant contributes to patient care under the direction of a nurse or provider. The position is an integral part of the team, responsible for preparing rooms for examinations, maintaining patient care equipment, and performing various clerical duties.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assist the provider by facilitating patient and information flow through various stages of the patient visit.
- Review daily schedule and prepare electronic health records (EHR); promote efficient workflow.
- Greet and escort patients to exam rooms in a professional and confidential manner.
- Obtain patient information including purpose of visit, vital signs, and document accurately into the EHR.
- Inform providers of any abnormal readings or significant deviations from previous visits.
- Perform routine procedures as directed by the provider (e.g., EKG, PPD reading, ear lavage, peak flow, vision screening, audiometry).
- Administer immunizations and injections under the supervision of a registered nurse or provider.
- Clean exam rooms after each patient visit.
- Assist with scheduling follow-up procedures or necessary referrals.
- Maintain patient care equipment and report any repair needs to the supervisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Certified Medication Aide license.
- Basic Life Support certification or ability to obtain certification after hire.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and intellectual backgrounds.
PREFERRED SKILLS
- Phlebotomy certification or previous medical assistant experience.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of universal precaution procedures in medical safety practices.
- Previous experience working in a hospital, clinic, or physician’s office.
- Bi-lingual proficiency is preferred.
SUPERVISION
This position does not have any direct reports.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
May require prolonged periods of sitting. Some bending, lifting, stooping, and stretching may be necessary. Requires normal hearing and vision. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity are needed to operate office equipment such as computers, photocopiers, telephones, and calculators. Lifting up to 35 pounds may be required.
