About the role
The Medical Assistant assists the medical staff with preparation of surgical patients by performance of routine and delegated duties according to standards and policies. The Medical Assistant takes vital signs, escorts patients to their designated area, cleans the work station areas and equipment, administers eye drops to patients, obtains blood glucose levels, and ensures a steady flow of patient turnover. The Medical Assistant will work closely with the nursing staff to provide excellent patient care.
Responsibilities
- Aid and anticipate the needs of nursing staff relating to patient care.
- Prepare the surgical patient for surgical and special procedures cases by obtaining vital signs, obtaining blood glucose levels when appropriate, administering eye drops to patient as ordered, cleaning patient equipment and areas as needed.
- Escort patients to their designated areas, stock inventory in their assigned area, familiarize self with procedures performed, understand how to prioritize patient needs, and understand the scope of practice of a Medical Assistant.
- Support staff to Physician, Nursing Staff, and OR Tech as DON sees fit, assist with turnover, assist with monthly and quarterly inventory counts, assist with monthly outdate checks of supplies, assist with supply reordering to designated par levels, transfer frozen sections to lab as necessary, assist as directed in the delivery of emergency care, maintain confidentiality of the patients’ records and protect the patients’ privacy, participate in performance improvement program.
- Other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Basic knowledge of anatomy.
- Knowledge of how to obtain vital signs, blood glucose level and temperature.
- Knowledge of maintenance and care of equipment and instrumentation.
- Knowledge of medication administration with scope of practice.
- Awareness of safety precautions and emergency procedures.
- Thorough understanding of surgical procedures.
Qualifications
- Desirable: Current certification by the California Certified Medical Assistant Board, one year MA experience (within the last 2 years).
- Desirable: Graduate of a Medical Assistant program, or equivalent education, experience, or training.
- Desirable: Current Basic Life Support certification.
